Float Suit Buell
« on: December 20, 2019, 08:36:51 AM »
Looks like a great idea. I'm fully suited up, or I'd be looking at them for sure.

I like the spring suit style. Good reef and board impact protection with a little added float. Good on Jamie for promoting it. I'd probably by one...
It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

Like the springsuit style ... solves the whole issue with vests riding up over your head, or getting completely ripped off.  But would prefer something a little more visually understated, like black, grey, or blue.  At my age, I'm think'n I'd look pretty ridiculous in the JOB camo.

I like it. I don't really want the warmth, I have my built in Orca suit for that, but I love the float of my impact vest, but I can't swim for shit in it. Feels like I have a sea anchor out.

People love to phoo-phoo on safety stuff because it's not cool. I've worn a helmet in heavy surf since Gath started making them. Now wearing an impact vest, and have been looking for a way to get a suit like this, but without looking like a JOB fanboy...though I kind of am  ;D

Here's some carnage from the last year. Back panel in my impact vest from hitting the reef. Helmet damage from hitting the reef (slight concussion). Ribs damage from the board rail with 3mm wet suit, but no vest.

Agreed about the loudness. I Assume they'll be making it in more neutral versions.

As for safety, I don't really go in terribly big surf, but I recently switched to a waist leash, so I'm sure my next wet suit will be a floater...

As for the helmut, I think my east coast sandy bottom / small waves have kept me from head impacts so far. But perhaps as I advance into bigger surf I'll need one.

Whats that saying? ... Oh yeah, shit happens!
Last summer my SUS buddy down the street took an awkward fall in average, nothing special summer-time FL beach break surf, board hit him, broke 2 ribs, punctured a lung. He almost drowned, spent several days in hospital. He's always telling me I need to get some protection.

Yea, I find this suit to be a good solution for the warmer times. I have had my
zipperless impact vest pulled half off up over my head during a wipeout, ugly scary moment.  I now where surf shirts over it and that prey much works.

I seem to get my worst injuries surfing smaller waves. Most of the time I think we just get lucky.

I think you are right. Small surf breaking in shallow water increased  risk of injury. Just stepping off the board in shallow water can put your knees at risk. I try to test the depth with my paddle (handle down) before stepping off.

I poked two holes in my Ion impact vest near the bottom of the zipper on each side and I tie my board short string through it. Minor wedgie if you go in feet first, but the vest stays down. You can poke the holes with a car key or a fin key--don't use something sharp. You can make a hole that will keep ripping if you cut a slot.

Along the lines of safety, a grom surfer (13) from San Clemente just about lost his life at Pipeline this week. Brings up issues about safety and kids doing stuff beyond their skill set. Should kids wear helmets and padded wetsuits? They think they're good ripping it up at Trestles, but Pipe is a whole nother level.
