Early Days & Thoughts On Foiling
« on: January 27, 2020, 10:50:18 PM »
I’ve been out of the water for a couple of weeks due to some back issues. It’s tough to watch some amazing wind and waves and not be out there in the water enjoying them. Sup surf and downwind for many years now and then came foiling. Bam! I haven’t been on any board without a foil for almost two years now. They are all collecting dust in the garage.
So whilst killing time out of the water I came across this article on foiling which is from 2001.

I particularly found the quotes from DK. interesting. The first was when he first road the bumps after exiting a wave and continued on for a few hundreds yards and then realized that anything is possible. The second one was when he mentions the possibility of riding swells between the islands. I remember hearing Laird say something similar somewhere. All of this has happened! With record times to boot.
And then there is this inspirational video of Kai from 3 years ago. In it he states something like always been a dream to fly. That did it for me! I’ve been on the same mission only a couple years late and decades older the Kai.I wish more people could enjoy the thrill of flying above the swell for miles and miles at a time. It’s never crowded on downwinders🤙   http://youtu.be/2JaE57jHuIc

I agree. Foiling has come so far in such a short time. To ride a machine as efficient as a hydro-foil has been a wake up call for all of us.  There is not a stretch of water on earth where a foil is not welcomed.  Flatwater, behind boats and skis, lakes, rivers, river waves, ocean swell, ocean waves...… Have I missed something?
I can remember riding an Air-Chair 15-20 years ago and getting that "flying" feeling.  I was hooked.  Thank goodness for people like Alex Aguera  and others who were curious enough to experiment with low speed, high lift foil shapes.  Thank goodness for everyone else who pushed further into this new science of fun.  So many ideas to test, so little time.
