Iphone Teckie Question - instant discharge in Golf Bag
« on: December 02, 2019, 07:57:53 AM »
ha ha... first world problems! ;D ;D

Just curious is all.

My Iphone 6S plus has good battery life all the time....
EXCEPT when in my golf bag.
Noticed this a few times, so yesterday:
I took a screen shot before I put it in my bag ... about 85% charge (pic 1)
I closed out ALL open apps and turned the phone off
and no...I don't have any golf tracking APPs on my phone.

Zippered pocket, in between spare balls and an insulated drink pouch... then the shafts of the clubs... mostly metal, some carbon

1 hour and 8 minutes later, I took it out for a battery check -----   1%
(pic 2)

I came home, charged it and it's still 95%,  18 hours later

So, is my Iphone watching NETFLIX while I play golf.... or is there a reasonable explanation?

Hey Creek, is it possible that with each putt you take, you lose a % of battery life?   ;D

It’s possible your bag is blocking the signal so your phone is constantly hunting.
The way to know for sure is to check the temperature of your balls. ;D

Hi Creek,
My suggestion would be to repeat the experiment, but this time disable bluetooth, wifi, airdrop, location services, fitness tracking, and put it in airplane mode, and enable low power mode.
My guess is the phone is trying to "phone home" but is unable to find a signal due to location (far from tower) or interference from metal (faraday cage).
To save battery life, I always have the above services listed above disabled, and only enable them when needed.
You want to prevent modern portable lithium batteries from dropping below 50%, else you risk irreversibly damaging a cell, shortening the batteries life.

if the balls' temp exceeds air temp by significant amt, all else equal, will that ball drive further than a ball that is same as air temp?

might be creek is simply.....cheating

he aint getting any younger at the pro tees

the old iphone excuse for heating up one's balls

it's like kicking every shot a few extra feet up the fairway

bad bad creek!

@ sflinux
I don't use many location apps, plus it doesn't happen riding my bike or hiking

The experimenting is a good idea.... next round, I'll put the phone in a different location.
I have always carried my phone when playing, and never had any battery loss before.... now it is EVERY time I play.

Entertainment for a non surf day  ;D ;D

 ???

At 71, I can still hit my 3 wood 265 yards.... so, not cheating yet Eastie.

I like golf for the simple fact that it's is a game where honor counts.
The rules of golf are not subjective
That's why it is so hard.... and exactly why I find it so appealing.

took lessons/played a bit as a boy--still got a swing--cant stand playing---zero catharsis for me--i can stay cheerful for nine, then i get cranky

but it clearly is a joy to many, incl you--so pls enjoy

bet your phone fail has nothing to do with bag--ie in pocket on that course it'll drain off too--for reason explained by sflinux--bad signal there

it is possible that the balls and metals etc in bag block signal, where the signal is ok if not in bag???

and yes, if phone is in bag with your balls, and it's struggling to get/retain connection, that will drain battery and also generate heat, so your warm balls would, in fact, be a clue

did you find that your balls were warm??

Eastie... so glad that it's ok with you if like golf.

Had an awesome day playing around the snow patches.... 38* and my balls were plenty warm  :)
.... and the phone lasted till I took this pic on the 2nd hole!

Gotta love being outside on a cold, windy day, with no surf.   :)

Stoney.....
It's about getting outside in the winter.... having a great 2 hour walk in a beautiful, peaceful place.

I was literally smiling on every hole, so stoked to be there!  :)
