SUP foil board leash length?
« on: November 14, 2019, 06:35:08 AM »
After my recent foil lesson, I learned you have to have a leash or be ready for a long swim. Can’t believe how fast foil boards drift away.  The don’t use a leash when teaching behind a jet ski..

What kind of leash do you guys use and what length?  I’d hate to have a foil board snap back into me after a wipe out.

10 ft coil SUP leash attached to waist. The coil reduces leash length, critical to keeping it from getting wrapped around the foil.

Kick back is not an issue with foiling. It tends not to tombstone because of the foil. It foils up backwards, preventing whitewater from tugging real hard on it.

After a lot of experimenting, this is the one.  https://www.amazon.com/FCS-Freedom-Surfboard-Leash-Over-Braided/dp/B07Q339YYL/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2YJ7HFGP5Q9Q1&dchild=1&keywords=fcs%2Bfreedom%2Bleash&qid=1573747250&sprefix=fcs%2Caps%2C612&sr=8-1&th=1&psc=1 It is super minimal, doesn't rotate on your ankle and never tangles on itself, the foil, or on a short straight wrist leash (also highly advised).  It is pretty surprising how frustrating a bad leash setup is...and how painless is when you have the good stuff.

thanks a lot Dwight and Admin, the Zone to the rescue again

I had bought a floating Dakine leash so it wouldn't sink or tangle around the foil..

I use Dakine sup coiled calf leash 3/16. Works great until it stretched a lot.
Addicted to foiling at the moment.

When the leash is on your ankle it puts leash deep underwater where it is prone to snagging foil. Attach to waist and keeps it away from foil when down in the water

Try this little guy, DW.  It is short enough that I have never had it wrap on the foil (or anything else).  It goes deep but there is no slack so it can't wrap.

I tried a 10’? foiled ankle leash and I definitely don’t recommend it. Never had the board come flying back at me but did have it slowly drift back and bonk me on the nose. :o  I just casually let myself float to the surface and because the leash was attached to my ankle, it pulled the board back towards me.

I’m currently using a longboard straight ankle leash, maybe about 10’ long.  A friend suggested cutting a foam golf ball and gluing it around the leash to keep it floating. Couldn’t find any such thing locally so just used a piece of foam zip tied to the leash. It tends to move around but helps a lot to keep the leash from wrapping around the mast. Overall, I prefer a longer leash as I feel a little more comfortable when I crash and jump off, I don’t have to worry about the leash pulling the board towards me as much as if the leash were shorter. The floater helps me get away with this.

Really wish someone would make a long floating leash.

SUPdad, Dakine makes a 6ft floating leash designed for foiling.  Bought one but haven’t used it yet. 6 ft is kind of short I know...

Yes, I just bought one for the prone board I just got. Seems pretty short for someone as hazardous as me.  ;D  I actually haven’t used it yet either. I’ve been using an 8’ leash for now. That one has yet to wrap around the mast but I’ve only gone out twice on it.

We tried coiled and straight leashes for both wings and boards at a variety of lengths.  We used one or both to a waist belt as well.  We never had a tangle free setup until we went to 6 foot Freedom leashes on the ankle and 3.5 foot Swing leashes on the wrist.  We resisted this because it seemed like more slack would be be easier and more functional but the opposite is true.  I am all for experimentation and I get that this will be personal preference in part.  That said, if you are still getting any tangles, try this setup.

Who has it? It’s not on Dakine’s web site.

I just started using a 7 ft StayCovered.  I like the length but, this summer  I got tossed around in a 6-8 ft wave and it felt like my leash wrapped around the fuselage and the force of the water(it was deep) alone snapped my mast.  I keep wondering if the lack of elongation with a shorter leash might have been part of the reason.

I went over there and picked one up. Turns out, Dakine just made a leash cord from plastic tubing. Simple solution to make a floating cord. They told me a 9ft version will be released later.  They use it on their efoil to keep the leash out of the prop.

This is it on Dakine’s page. https://www.dakine.com/en-us/sport/surf/leashes/superlite-6-1-4-surf-leash/
