How long is your ride to the water?
« on: November 13, 2019, 09:59:41 AM »
When I lived in RI, it was 10 minutes or less, perfect.  Now that I'm in San Diego, it's 20 minutes there and 30 min back ... and I'm unhappy about it, though I know I shouldn't be.  But it did get me to wondering -- how long does it take the folks here to get to their go-to surf spot?

From my home in southeast Tx to Surfside, Tx where I sup surf the most; it is 117 miles to Surfside and it takes me 2.5 hours to get there and 2.5 hours to arrive back at my home.

Its 1.5 hrs to Seaside (78 miles) or 1.75hrs to Pacific city (94miles)from Portland.  Worst part is getting out of the city.

13 minute drive to my favorite foiling spot. 35 minute drive to my favorite surf spot. The difference is enough that I'm now foiling 80% of the time.

Linter... for surf, 3-4 hours from Seattle... or a long plane ride to elsewhere... hope that makes you feel better : )

Tho’ flat water is basically in the backyard, but I’m thinking about waves and am envious of you all on proper coastlines...

Flatwater-
30 seconds to walk out my back door to the dock and paddle out

Wakesurf/foil-
Same as flatwater, except we have to uncover the boat and idle out to fast water

Surf-
2 hours to Santa Cruz (Lots of good friends to visit)
5.5 hours to Ventura (Son and grandkids live here)
9 hours to North County San Diego  (Love camping at San Elijo and hanging with Cardiff Sweeper)

I would give anything to live closer to real waves, but we have a pretty good gig here in Discovery Bay, for the past 23 years.

About 5 minutes depending upon traffic.

I debate whether I'd really like to be closer or not, but,
I think I've missed some better days that I would have got if I was just down the street.
Also, I'd likely surf closer to dusk if I was just down the street.

Parking is part of the issue.  With 25 pound boards I like to park pretty close.
I'm pretty picky on where I'll park.  Occasionally, I can't get a spot that I like
and I go do something else and drive back later.  LOL, its more crowded these days
and I probably drive more miles going around the break getting a good parking spot
than I do driving from home.

About 5-7 minute walk to the river and 5 minute drive to the first put in spot at the closest lake. My favourite lake is about 35/40 minutes and 45kms away, closer to an hour to a better starting point.

5 minutes to closest or 10 minutes to my Go-To surf break
1.5 hours to point breaks to my north
2+ to point breaks to my south

Fall through Spring, I may drive 3 times a week to the off Cape spots... so I do a lot of driving when wind and swell dictate it.
Been doing it for 55 years, so I don't even notice it.

5 minutes from a number of great flat-water spots

6 signals (4 to 6 minutes) to DoHo. 12 minutes to SanO.  20 minutes to get home. I drive slower after a good session.
It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

10 minutes by Electric bike.

I haven't used a car in 10 years to go SUP'ing (maybe just a few times):
