Yet another diy wing
« on: October 15, 2019, 09:40:43 AM »
Some progress pics of my new extra large high aspect gull wing. Its intended for sup downwinding  in 10kts wind to 50+. 1180mm span for easy lift off but a thin foil section and custom (hopefully) aerofoil with all the qualities that i like and none that i dont .. ha.

Centre section is high density foam with the outboard sections polystyrene.

yes it is still I haha, I got that tapatalk app on my phone but couldnt figure out how to log in using my old details.
cheers theres still heaps of work to do yet but its turning out quiet a nice shape, the wing tip curve is slicccck. not the easiest thing in the world to shape out of cheap polystyrene

Very nice shape!  Id be really excited to try that on a wave.  What wing profile?  Length? Cord? Thickness ratio?

I cant remember what the numbers are, i dont really pay attention to that anyway i just do what i think looks right.
Here is the drawing for the polystyrene tips, but that is only a core so the finished dimensions will be slightly bigger. Not sure if i will keep the concave on the top surface yet, well see how it looks when shes all laminated and faired up

So good man. And yeah, shaping EPS is weird for sure.

Oooo, Jamall   ...unless you are a certified genus whose brain automatically processes Reynolds numbers without knowing it, you may have made a very pretty sculpture.  I am still rooting for you.

Nice looking wing. I was aiming for a similar set of dihedral/anhedral changes in the fatboy wing. Somehow I didn't quite go as far as I wanted, but it's in the ballpark.

Wetstuff--I doubt any current builder making foil wings is paying attention to reynolds numbers. At best they might go to airfoiltools.com and plug in their foil measurements, but beyond that it's cut and try.

In my own case, the only time I tried to use foil calculations was when I designed the geezer foil, and I was off by a factor of four.

Well i must be a genius then wetstuff
i have made 5 wings prior to this, all designed and shaped by eye and 2 of which i can flat water start on the sup which is no easy feat, i think this one will turn out just fine

Wetstuff, this is Container. He's probably the best home foil maker I've seen. He knows what he's doing for sure.

Not his first rodeo.  ;D

Very nice profile!  Ive used this similar profile several times. Very nice flight characteristics.  I use  1-1.5 degrees of washout.  That  produces a very forgiving wing when higher speeds are reached.   My second to last wing also had a little gull wing to it, not as pronounced as yours.  It is one of my favorite wings.

C'hit...  C'mon, I am a fullon fan of anyone whose fingers are directly linked to their brain.  Hell, Bruno Legaignoux and his brother were teenagers when they came up with inflatable kites - that seemed to work pretty well.

While my Geezerfoil experience left a certain distrust for theoretical vs. practical, I've been browsing airfoils commonly used for hydrofoils and came across the Eppler817. The characteristics look ideal for our low speed, wide range applications, especially given the big variations we use in angle of attack. Most hydrofoil watercraft don't pitch as much. I've never seen an airfoil like this in use. Could be worth a try.
