I don't remember the exact size that I rode in Mexico, it was about 4 years ago. My guess is that it was around 8'4" and around 130 liters. It was plenty stable for me, and I would not have called it difficult or challenging to paddle around the break. I was just shocked at how slow it was trying to paddle onto a wave, and also once on the wave. I know that some people really like them, but it just did not work for me.

Indeed. I've been scouring the internet for reviews and a lot of people report the same thing. Case closed on that one.

Hypernut bombed. The Coke bottle didn't work. Checking what's for sale on Seabreeze is a great resource.

Wish there were other location filters. From what I can tell you can only filter Aussie cities. I'm in good ole New England USA.

Wasn't suggesting as a resource to buy; rather to see what latest and greatest bombed!

Own both boards the JL super frank 8x30 lean 115ltr less than 7.7kg non carbon and Starboard hypernut 7'4x30 106ltrs 8.7kg starlight construction 2+1 hybrid sup surf+foil.
I'm a big fan of JL quality and construction and the hypernut is also well made and the construction seems ok for short term use. Both are great boards to surf.
The HN feels narrower in the surf than 30" wide as stated and feels like a 28" wide. As you would expect the HN at 7'4 is soo whippy around the surf but a little unstable standing and waiting for a wave. The weight difference of 1kg in the surf is hardly noticeable.
The reason why I bought the HN because I wanted a one board quiver to do surf and foil and not carrying two boards and JL didn't have a hybrid board available for 2+1 surf foil. I wanted an easy entry into foiling and the HN was great at doing both sup surf and sup foil. I was really surprised at how good the HN on the surf, I was thinking the HN would be horrible due to the looks and shapes but it works and I can see why it has been around in SB range since I can remember.
I sold my JL SF because I'm going down low ltrs and narrower as my surf skill has improved a little.
Currently selling my HN because I moved on to a shorter foil board to 6'5" length.

The is the blurb of HN

I've read up A LOT on the JL SF and have seen your posts. You were on the 8' lean and weigh 80kg and you're downsizing? I'm about to buy the 8'6 wide and am 5'11" and weigh 85kg (sans wetsuit... and I'm in New England so I'm usually wearing a whole lotta neoprene). I think I'm gonna bite the bullet on it and am really hoping it won't feel like I'm standing on a barge, but then again I'm still somewhat of a beginner / advanced beginner so...

I think the 8'6 lean might be too big for you long term though it might be ok if you only surf once a week or once every two weeks but if you surf say twice or 3x times a week, I would get the 8'x30 lean. I know a dude your weight that surfs a lot and rides the 76 x 29.5″x 4"liters 100L.

I'm about to buy a lightly used 8'6 wide carbon from a local guy for 50% of retail price. I try to surf as much as possible, but the conditions at my break only allow once or maybe twice a week. I'm thinking I should look at it as a stepping stone towards lower shorter/lower volume once I progress a bit... just slightly nervous that the volume will hinder my progression, but maybe that's a silly concern?

...I found it very slow to paddle, slow to catch waves, and slow on the wave; overall not a winner for me...

Same here, I tried both the 8 and the 8.6 and I believe it was the 2016 model. the 8.6 was much better
but still not a winner in the category. If had to choose between that and the super frank 8.6 the JL would be
a clear winner for me.

I picked up a sweet Jimmy Lewis Super Frank carbon 8'6 yesterday... it only weighs 13lbs - I could pick it up with my middle finger! I immediately took it out in the nor-easter swell in Rhode Island and was stable on it even with gusty 30mph winds, unreal! Holy moly this things is fast and loose... gonna take some getting use to, but I think we're gonna have a good time together.

Thanks for everyone's advice! Super appreciative of all your input.
