Solo SUP at remote break
« on: September 26, 2019, 08:38:22 AM »
Reasonable swell and bad local winds = Road Trip!

Drove a few hours, understanding that most breaks would be jam packed.
The trick is always to find some uncrowded waves.

I have surfed this particular spot before, but usually alone because of the long paddle, so I didn't have a feel for the local vibe..... which can be protective, at the more remote breaks.
After all, that's why people make the effort.... to leave the herd behind.
(out of respect, I try to obscure the location)

I spaced out my rides.... waited patiently and picked off some nice outside sets.

I chose the Sunova 9'5 SOUL for the long paddle, running 5.5" twinz in the sides and a 4.5" pivot fin.

Efforts rewarded  :)

NOTE:
I used some $$$$ fancy lens treatment..... and it fogged up my lens. Apologies!  :-\

Some backside speeders. Nice Creek. We've had some good swell here as well. I've been hanging around at DoHo playing the inside out game. (It's only 5 min from my house) We've had these waist high NW wind swell that are steady and break inside, then these long period S swell that have long lulls but them 8 to 10 wave sets head high outside. I just rack up the wave count inside, where it's just me and a couple of locals exchanging waves. Then when the sets hit, we just charge outside. Everyone sitting outside take the first two or three waves. By the time I make it out, there's four more and it's wide open:)  Surfed Sunday morning for 4 hours, then 3 hours in the evening. 2 hours Monday morning and my body is still feeling it. 73 deg water too....
Had to pull one of my rash guards out the laundry basket. It was from last Friday and it was ripe. I even just floated in the water for a while, but it still was a little ripe ;D

It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

Those seemed to be fast moving waves. The 9'5" seemed to easily handle those waves. Nice lefts too. Looked to be a great two hour session.

As always, thanks for sharing your videos.

funny, TD, I do similar---go for the shifty aframes in the middle--get lefts and rights--then when the sets hit the main jetty peak, cleans it out so i can slide in for one of the last couple in the set---net, i take few waves that any proner could have taken-but my wave count is sick---some say jeeze you get a lot of fun waves---some scowl---haha!

Pretty sweet. We've had nothing but crap. Big, but crap. It's been typhoon after typhoon, but they keep coming close in, so on the bigger days, the wind is really killing it. Another typhoon due in Monday/Tuesday, so here's hoping.

Thanks Creek,

Some very nice long rides. A bit crowded but worth paddling out. That board surfs beautifully!

Remote breaks was the reason I got into SUP in the first place. Had some super sessions way out and no one around. Glad my leash held up tho otherwise the mile+ swim would have been a PITA. :-)
How far out is it?

Right on the coast.... just very private property with no nearby access.

RbGar..... your whole coast is now overloaded with people who used to surf on Cape Cod, but the sheer numbers of Great Whites have driven them to your breaks.

on the plus side:
I have gained a new appreciation for the Great Whites...
Thanks to them, once crowded breaks are empty..... I get to surf great waves with a few friends  ;D ;D ;D
