Fanatic Sky SUP ws edition and similar boards
« on: September 23, 2019, 01:47:25 PM »
Revisiting an inquiry into board platforms that can be used for multiple foil sports, since I saw this 2020 offering from Fanatic:

https://www.fanatic.com/sup/composite-boards/foil/sky-sup-foil-ws

6'11" with a step-tail, and it looks like the mast track is wildly close to the front foot in comparison with most ws foil boards. Seems like an ideal shape for sup foil downwinding and wing foiling, but maybe awkward for windsurfing?

The Naish Hover crossover seems to have a more normal mast track to front footstraps distance.

Any experience with either of these boards or speculations about their performance prospects? The characteristics I'm looking for are:

1. Playful smaller alternative to my current windsurf foil platform which is a huge 230x100 cm formula board.
2. Works for sup foil (most interested in downwind sup foil)
3. Works for wing foil in case I get a wing at some point

Right now I think #1 is the most important for me.

PS- I got to try WINGsurfing this weekend with my buddy's 5.0 Duotone wing. We used it on my 10'4 windsup first, then a 6'6 foil sup. Pretty easy on the first board, pretty hard on the second board. Low performance compared to foil windsurfing. When I wasn't taking a turn on buddy's wingading I was sailing circles around him with my 4.7 sail and foil-equipped formula board. Still, there's a lure to wing thing, and I like the idea of using a smaller board for my foil windsurfing that I could also use as a foil sup for downwinding or gentle waves.

SUPís windsurf foil poorly compared to real windsurf foilboards. Moving the foil way forward in the board, makes it loose its mind. Doesnít track as straight, doesnít go upwind as good, spins like a top when you grab the uphaul...just a hot mess compared to the real thing.

For wing dinging, focus on that need when picking a board.

I was interested in these too specifically the reg sky supfoil 6í11Ē as it looks nice board for bigger riders like myself and had a old fanatic AW and build quality is pretty stout,So I contacted them and just like the wingwing advertising hype months in advance then are not available,wa wa to who knows when?they said not till Dec so Iím guessing next year jokester marketing, maybe itís just the states who knows so my interest faded rapido.why market hype them in July/aug when you canít get em till 6 months later😡good luck

I did not use a wind foil board for winging because I noticed all the SUPs had the foil track much further forward then the dedicated wind foil board.

I assume this has to do with Mast Foot Pressure which you have a lot of up front on the wind foil and none when Winging or SUPing.

So I decided to go with a dedicated SUP foiling board, as I really want that SUP foiling experience, without the paddling.

Regarding Winging vs. Wind Foiling at this time most Wingers are riding big foils which are slow, but a ton of fun on any bumps and swells.

As you are on a formula board, I am guessing your wind foiling style is more towards speed vs. surfing.

I agree right now the Wing seems more for surfing, and if you want speed wind or kite foiling is the best option.

However, winging is really new, so we might see some some start to use smaller front foil wings with their wings and that will be a lot faster.

I think you are on the right track.  The Sky SUP WS 6.11 is about the best one board for all 3 foil sports.  Of course its not going to be as fast as a dedicated foil WS board but for what you want it will be perfect in regards to #1.  Enjoy and report back on what you get.

Roberto Ricci Designs has another option in this category...I'm currently comparing the Naish Hover Crossover vs. Fanatic Sky SUP WS vs. RRD H-Flight Windsurf/SUP...the RRD has multiple foil finbox options, the Naish Crossover and Fanatic Sky SUP WS are limited.
