Home Insurance for SUP gear
« on: September 12, 2019, 06:24:18 AM »
Hi all,

My dad's garage was recently burgled and they stole his paddle and board among other things. He tried to claim for these on his home insurance but was told that watersports equipment like surfboards, windsurfers, SUP's and boats were not normally covered.

I have spoken to my insurer as well and they do not cover them either allthough they do cover surfboards which is weird!!

I was just wondering if anyone had any advice on insurance for my gear at home please? I've tried to google it and all it comes up with is watersports travel insurance.

Thanks in advance
James

If your agent knows what he's doing you can add a rider for about anything, but you might not like the price.

I just added a rider this week for 2 SIC boards and 2 QB paddles for about $30/year total.  Covers 100% replacement cost for loss, theft, or damage with a $0 deductible through a well known provider.

I’d recommend getting in touch with an agent/broker and going through an insurance review every few years.

- SIC Bullet 12’6
- Fanatic AllWave 9’4
- Quickblade Trifecta 96

I had coverage for a board stolen from my deck, without a rider, so it is likely also a function of different carriers’ coverages.

Also, the rider might still be subject to the deductible.  In my case $2000, so unless several boards are lost in the same event, no recovery for me...

When I had a catamaran, I got  a rider to my homeowner’s policy. I was reading the policy one day (rtfp as they say in the biz) and noticed it excluded storing on the beach and sailing in the ocean, making it useless.  I got a separate stand-alone policy which had a $100 deductible and a $70 premium.  It paid 3 large claims over the years.  It came under the classification of Inland Marine.

The mast was bent each time. The third time they paid the claim and didn’t renew the policy.  Never weaseled on a claim.

Thanks for all the replies but I'm not sure what you mean by adding a rider?

I'm in England so may just be our insurance companies being difficult and not very bespoke.

When I spoke to them, I asked if they had anything to cover it but nothing was offered

I thought it was something worth raising to the UK crowd so they don't get stung like my dad did.

Cheers

I checked with my insurer, and they said it is covered as long as I am not a professional watersports person.

I have Lemonade and like them.

I have LLoyds (but in the states) and they covered the theft from the residence.
