I use the waist portion by Leashlok but the leash I am going with the Balin Downwind leash. Very happy with the combination.

+1 on leashlok Hawaii
You order the leash you want (it comes with an ankle cuff) and then the waist leash separately. Easy to swap them around but I now have three ankle cuffs that I donít need. I have a Crow Hailey also but prefer leashlok.

I like the Leashlok belt, but I had the velcro pull open on me while I was getting worked in a big set. I think I didn't press it firmly closed--too excited to get out into some very pretty surf--but I've added a click buckle to mine. I also recommend as stout a leash as you can get or make, you can't really minimize the pull on a waist leash like you can by streamlining yourself with an ankle leash.
Ponohouse is for sale: http://www.ponohouse.com

The one I use is actually called the Monster Coild and teh Downwinder but should ebc alled that because that is what it has been designed for by DJ.
Some coil by the waist and then some straight plus a couple more useful details:

Coiled is just asking for a tangled mess at some point IMO.

+1 No matter how you attach it, in the surf a coiled leash is dangerous. I've had a few bad surfing experiences that were caused directly by a coiled leash. I'd be better off with no leash than a coiled leash in the surf. I use them on my race / distance boards only.

Coils tangle and self knot when they drag in the water behind you, bouncing along, and getting caught up in the whitewater, bouncing even harder.

BUT, with a waist leash, and because a foiler always stands in the middle of a board,  the coil never touches the water while surfing, so they do work for foiling.

Yeah the Balin Monster is the best coiled leash IMO. DJ did a good job there. Itís akso good that the knee/calf cuff has soft neoprene edges: I tried a DaKine coupled leash recently and because the cordura-type material extended to the edges of the cuff, it rubbed against the skin and left me with red welts. Donít the people who design these leashes actually try them before they put them into production? The Balin Monster is so good because it was designed by someone who actually SUPs.

I use the Balin Minster with an ION waist belt for downwinding.

But I also always use straight leashes in the surf, unless it is really tiny and I know I wonít be falling.

Coiled leashes often get tangled after a wipeout on a wave. The turbulence of the water twists the cord during recoil and can take quite a while to untangle. If you're caught inside and the knot gets pulled tight, you might have to fix it on shore.

waist leash with the coil is good for 14ft board and dw foil. I wouldn't use waist leash in the surf because of its a hazard. Also, knee leash is annoying when the connection joint swivel between the back of your knee when you are trying to knee paddle because of your getting thrown around by current and chop/waves. Ankle leash is imo the best for surf either straight or coil but I would avoid coil leash on big days surf.
