SUP in 1947 Movie
« on: August 28, 2019, 07:07:59 PM »
I don't think this topic came up before but I turned on the TV today and it was tuned to TCM and there was a 1947 Movie titled Good News on and a boy looked like he was paddleboarding across the screen!  Wonder if this is back when Duke Kahanamoku started doing this?

Here is a picture:

This famous clip which I'm sure you've seen at this point is form 1939:

This was a surf ski from Australia that was given to Duke as a gift.  It was (as surf skis have always been) a sit down craft but Duke stood on it.   I honestly think this a coincidence and modern SUP would happen with or without Duke standing on us surf ski.  Same thing with the kid in the movie.

I sure people have been standing and paddling for a thousand years. Why wouldn't they?
Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.

I never get tired of that clip.... so much of our lives is wrapped into that short bit of history  :)

Before surfers began to turn, every wave was a Party Wave!

Rick, it got me thinking, was it really that crowded in Waikiki back then, or were they all just hamming it up for the camera?

Very cool stuff for sure.

The Aussie rig looks like a Hessake, the improbably heavy and very clumsy Isreali rescue board.

Agree!  Was thinking about this last night and why it might not have taken off like it did more recently and figured it was because the Koa Surfboards were so heavy to start with even before they were supersized for SUP?

What is interesting about the 1947 movie is that the craft, paddle and technique seemed more similar to modern SUP (vs. standup canoeing or kayaking) than some of the other videos I have seen.
