Can you stand up paddle from San Francisco to Hawaii?
« on: August 24, 2019, 06:51:08 PM »
Antonio De La Rosa can!  After 76 days at sea he arrived in Honolulu this morning and I had the chance to paddle out in the dark to join him for the last few miles.

Congratulations are certainly in order. That was quite a feat. Glad to see he accomplished his goal and avoided any mishaps or any serious heath issues along the l-o-n-g journey.

Thanks for snagging that Robert, I don't think we would have heard about it.  I was a little surprised at how shallow his paddle was planted, and half expected in -perhaps a cartoon way- his Lats to look like Batman's cape and his shoulders as if he had butt implants.  If it takes me x-Newtons to move a 30lb board, can you imagine the slog that was...?!

I was kind of shocked at his technique at first, only using the tip and slipping the blade through the water.  You can't compare paddling this 1200 lb boat to a regular board though.  If he got a solid catch with each stroke his shoulders would probably have given out.   I calculated that he took over 1 million strokes during the trip, so he probably figured out the best way to keep the thing moving.

Here is an extended edit of the video that includes more details and footage from Antonio's Facebook page:

extremely impressive feat but one must remember it is called the milk run for a reason - 2000nm downwind, the whole way, with scarcely even a chance of any other wind direction if you stay in the trade belt. you could just about drift the trip in an inner tube if you took enough water
