Paint
« on: August 17, 2019, 10:57:52 PM »
So over the last few months I have done around 20 board repairs for people. I have been using rattle cans for my paint jobs. It gets the job done but now I am having trouble matching colors. What does everyone use for paint? I am looking at buying a good quality touch up paint gun.

i am not a pro, and really dont care to repair to perfection, so ive usually just used the best matching rattle cans i can find

but i just repaired my ridiculously expensive starby pro, so i wanted it to look better than my usual repair

i used these excellent paint markers---after a third glass/resin pass, where i put some micro-balloons in the resin to give it a whiter shade for the paint, i sanded to 420, then masked and mimicked the nearby graphics on the board--finished with two clear epoxy coats which i will feather sand to the undamaged nearby area---it looks pretty good, tho not perfect---but the board is back to watertight and weighs same as when new

https://www.posca.com/en/hints-and-tips/instructions/

quik kick resin research epoxy seems great--i have enough to last a lifetime, so i am married to it whatever the case, but the stuff dries fast and rock hard, so it doesnt chip at the edge of the patch as cheaper resins do when sanding

wear gloves, mask up, avoid skin contact with wet epoxy or it's dust--if youre wrong for the stuff it can fuck with your world---and it can take months or even years for the effects to show up, but take precautions, epoxy is not innocuous shit, and if your immune system doesnt like it, it can be serious

These are what I use. I have had custom paint (metallic's) mixed at an automotive paint store and sprayed it with my cap sprayer. Pretty easy if you know how to paint ;), but expensive. For board repairs (that I want to turn out nice) I use either of these brands. They have a huge color pallet and nice spray tip options. Of course a 2K clear over it is the icing on the cake, but concrete sealer in various glosses works well. Hobie used it on their race boards.

Used a lot in the surf ghetto.

I used both Montana spray cans and Posca markers under epoxy. Individually each worked great, but one colour of the Montana reacted badly with the epoxy, and one colour of the Posca (on top of the Montana) bled under the epoxy.

Test patches first!

Thanks for that, TD ...  "concrete sealer in various glosses works well."  I'll look into it.

Here's the stuff I've been using. It doesn't flow as well as poly, but it works fine for a board I'm just going to beat up.

I just re-coated one of my unlimiteds a few weeks ago. You can see the roller stipple, but it's smooth to the touch.

The not for 'Hydrostatic Applications' just means it's not to be considered a waterproofing product.

One other...  Guys on the motorhome forums say; "ZEP, gloss floor wax' instead of typical car waxes.  Holy C'hit is that a bitch to remove!

It is very hard to 'sponge' on a vertical wall so you see all the 'thick-and-thins'.  It may be fine for a FRP roof but not something you want to look at.  (it may layout better on a horizontal board across some sawhorses)

I found a great product for sealing/finishing boards it's called Costa Coat, I used to use concrete sealer but it yellowed after awhile. This stuff stays shiny and lasts for years. It goes on like concrete sealer, wipe it on, even looks just like it. It's expensive though, $200. a gallon, but I put it on one of my personal boards 3 years ago and it looks just as good as the day  I wiped it on, oh yeah, it takes at least 5 coats to get shiny, but it is worth it.
