What do you think of Surfline Sessions?
« on: July 31, 2019, 06:10:35 PM »
Just noticed this on Surfline.  You buy their app for your Apple Watch (if you have one) and run it when you paddle out.  Somehow the app instructs their cameras record your waves and then it sends the vid to your phone.  Of course, you have to surf near a Surfline camera, but those are everywhere in Newport.  Anybody know more about this?

It’ll be amazing in 5 years when 8k cameras let them dynamically zoom in on you.

For now I love it because all the shortboard kids will be jockeying for the good camera breaks. I’ll be slightly out of frame surfing with less of a crowd.

But for cams like the high res ones on Malibu it’ll be awesome. Might make me get an Apple Watch finally... for the water only.

I like everything about it except the frick'n Apple watch >:( I will not own or use an iphone or watch. I was trying to share photos with my brother while on vacation. The pictures from my Gopro on my phone and computer would not transfer to his iPhone. It had to be through iTunes on his computer to get to his phone. I'll just have to DropBox it to him. AirDrop this pile to pile format.  ::)

BTW, I paid $384. for my brand new Pixel 2 two years ago. Never had a problem with it. Battery still lasts a day and a half with regular use. In fact the battery has never died on me. My family has to carry an extra battery packs with them because their newer than mine iPhones won't last 8 hours on a charge. But's that's what all their friends have.

It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

I agree, except that I think they are not being totally honest with us.  All of the drone style, closeup stuff of that gal is not something that a camera mounted on a pole somewhere on the shore could deliver.  Unless I'm mistaken, the only kind of vid it could give you is vid like you see at the very end; from a fixed location, sort of like a SoloShot could do, which is still pretty cool.

if you surf in front of a cam now, you can do cam rewind and look at yourself already---and you can share the clip (on my brother's login!)

and, yeah, the view's not so great

love cowboy's concept of cam chasers crowding cams and leaving other peaks less crowded

maybe, for the first time, we can credit surfline with reducing crowds at a few breaks!

Interesting concept.  However the video is VERY misleading with its close-up views.

Here was an example of video I stripped from the Surf-line camera a few years ago.  Going Right then Left at Mavericks.

As big a deal as this may be it looks "ok"

Steamroller has been making good use of the Surfline views.  I suspect he pulled the footage for this clip:

Here was another sample Surfline video that I extracted using the TRACE.

The TRACE was sync'd with iPhone so when you catch a wave the time is reported exactly.

DAWN Patrol on the iWatch now provides similar metrics.

The first wave was a beast.  Outside Left at Middle Peak.  18 ft+  My surf-amigo decided to takeoff above me.  You can see me drop completely out of sight below:

Works with the Rip Curl Search GPS (still testing) supposedly as well - they just sent me beta instructions.
