had another little stretch of down time
« on: July 31, 2019, 10:54:06 AM »
Old guy stuff; when the meds fail to do much of anything about the enlarged prostate, the doctor can. Did a clean biopsy since he had a fair amount. Signs of chronic inflammation; bicycling is pretty much out unless I get the split seat. Paddling is fine again.  Big fun...

Ya, RTG...  Some of us 'need to take the dog out frequently'.  Mine occasionally likes 2 am if his old man had too much liquid after dinner.  These really hot/sweaty days are good, you don't retain as much.  Luckily, I've avoided a cath or needle - so far. Good luck with it.

The cath was the worst; after surgery they "rinsed" several gallons through over the course of a couple of days. If you're only at once a night sometimes, that's not bad. I was at 3+ every night.

Ya, Glide.. you see those commercials where the guy 'self-caths'...  "Ya, right!"   My wife was a surgical RN and gets that 'Sadist's Grin' at the mention. She just tells me; "Just go get a TURP."   (easy for her to say)

In case there's someone reading this thread who's a little deeper into this...  at least medicine is not asleep.

A TURP is exactly what I got. No cancer; I had already had a biopsy but they looked again at what they "harvested" during the TURP for more confirmation. Now it seems like everything is auto-immune related and I have chronic inflammation. There was even something in the pathology or examining the sample that indicates that. It should be small enough that it won't be much of an issue even when inflamed, but I still should avoid irritating it and causing inflammation, which is why I shouldn't bicycle. I did not read nearly enough into the phrase "irrigate the site after surgery". I was thinking rinsing a few times instead of a constant flow for a couple of days. Except the first day or so it isn't constant; sometimes it gets backed up because of a clot and they tell you their favorite lie - "this might hurt a little". They use a piston - a giant syringe - to rise a little more forcefully. If the rinse is pretty clear and there are no clots the second night, they will send you home. If you can provide a clean sample on your own and empty your bladder doing it (they use an ultrasound to check), you get to go home without any baggage. I was able to do that.

Standing is no problem; that part was back to the pre-surgical normal pretty quickly. Frequency and urgency is already a little better than before and that's with no meds. Should continue to improve; doc says months before it gets to new normal. I have slept the full night a couple of times in the last few days and up fewer times than what was usual on other nights. Very optimistic right now.
