Slippery deck pad...
« on: July 15, 2019, 12:01:39 PM »
It's my Venom 12'.  It is very smooth compared to the Blue Planet deck pad.  I need all the stability I can muster if I take it in the ocean.

I did a search here and found mostly 'replace it'...  But, I would prefer to work with it and not destroy it in the process.  I also searched the Tube and found Creek's posting about adding a tail kick on a Naish and some others who do the whole pad.

But what I am looking for is perhaps a 'sanding' solution.  I could wear booties but I am already the worst out there; I don't want to look as if I am only missing a Speedo and my reading glasses.

What's wrong with Speedos? Everyone seems to give me much
respect wearing those in the line-up, otherwise I can't explain why
they keep so much distance.

Burchas,  I still have a surfer's version of a Speedo - Birdwells with a 3" rise, or the damn Patagonia' that look like someone with a 34" waist has monster legs.  Comfortable/decent looking baggies is a sore subject.

...but, non-skid is the priority at the moment.  I need to take this 12' into the ocean, without appearing more spastic than I already am.

Wax 'em up baby!

Rub with sand. Mineral spirits. Wax.

Sticky bumps base. Warm water Eastern Shore top.

Funky, very functional.

Big’s ‘wax job’ sounds like a good solution.   And I wouldn’t include boots in the Speedo category... but maybe that just reveals something about ME?
About the sanding idea...you see marketing talking about heat sealed EVA deck pad to prevent water absorption. Depending on how Venom fabricates its deckpads, sanding may cause issues that way.

forget speedos, try g-string, it has less friction and more glide   ;D

I use either wire brush to scrub the pad gently or wax the pad but not too much otherwise the deck peels off.

DP,  I'm with you on booties at about 50f. but we have cracked thru 75f. on the right tide...   And, of course, I hit the deck with 40 grit before I read your warning...  I get a little impatient and tend to jump in.

Oooo - I like 'wire brush', Burchas. That should tooth it up better than the 40 grit.  (if below fails)

I gave it a good cleaning with some 3M general purp .. a hearty scub with 40-grit .. and a further cleaning with Alch.  It was pretty dirty from what looked like tarmac dirt from the parking lot. (I don't dare take out the toilettes and rub my feet...) I'll take your lead Bigs and carry wax with me.  Thanks.
