Tofino 7 July 2019
« on: July 07, 2019, 07:43:23 PM »
Got out this morning at 6:30 am and already ten young surfers in the water and two video cameras. A few fun waist high beach break waves on my 8’7” Creek. I like the new fins (Cdrive copies) that I have been using on both my boards the last week. Headed back to the mainland tomorrow and then to the interior of BC to celebrate my mom’s 100th birthday! Life is good.

Cheers

Bob

I think you need to get a Ukulele - lighter than a cello and more representative than an Hawaiian shirt which is too light for Tofino anyway. Enjoy the celebration.

Thanks Luc

Yes I play a ukulele, a bass uke that I travel with. Since 9:11 nearly impossible to travel with my double bass. The bass ukulele comes with me as carryon and I have a wonderful little Phil Jones amp that easily fits in my carryon suitcase. The tone of the bass uke is great but it is fretless and can be a bit pitchy.

Nice video.

BTW, I liked the background music. It has been a long time since I heard "Sleep Walk" by Santo & Johnny. The background music brought back pleasant memories for me.

Thanks for sharing your video.

Thanks Nightwing. I was fortunate to play bass for a jazz guitarist from Victoria, John MacArthur, a year or so ago. One of his favourite tunes to play was “Sleep Walk”. It is such a beautiful layed back song that conjures up memories as it did for you.

Hi Supnsurf

The Cdrive have been around for awhile mostly in Australia. A few of the lads there have found they work well on a variety of boards. I have been using a set for about 2 weeks and they seem to work well for me. Here is the website that is marketing them. https://www.surfnvs.com/collections/thrusters/products/c-drive-m-apex

Nice video! I once dreamed of living on Vancouver Island, but life got in the way...maybe in the next life :-)  Still plan on doing the West Coast Trail once my daughter graduates university (senior year), and I'm only paying for one kid still in college, and not two!

What are the crowds like? Bet it's easy to find a spot to yourself.

Yes the west coast trail is on many a bucket list. My brother and I hiked it twice over 40 years ago. Much of it remains as wild and unchanged as then. Now you need to reserve a start time on the trail months in advance as the park limits the number of hikers at any one time.

Crowds at our surf breaks are there in the summer but easy to avoid by paddling down the beach a bit or going out in the morning. Because it is all beach break there may be a couple of preferred takeoff points but rarely do I feel compelled to join the lineup. In general the vibe is fairly mellow and the classes are all on the inside.

Cheers

I am hoping to join you with my Nalu in October Bob. At 11'4 it should allow me to go where no respectable surfer would go :-)

Great Luc. Looking forward to getting out with you in October. You will be able to catch waves on the outside that no one else can pick up.
