Bump Cap
« on: July 06, 2019, 02:57:08 PM »
A friend of mine, who is part of the safety team on an Americas Cup foil boat, told me the crew was wearing something called bump caps.

My friend is going to start wearing one surf foiling. Me too!

I never knew this product even existed.

I first saw something similar for youth baseball caps...
https://unequal.com/dome-2/
...but the price was a bit ridiculous for what it is IMO.

But now the "LinerzInserts" are incredibly reasonable, and I too might be ordering one since I'm very really out on the water w/o a hat, and if nothing else...seems like an inexpensive way of keeping my non-foam front hats from sinking to the bottom. Thanks for the heads up.

Cool idea. Not being a foiler I have to ask, do you need top of skull protection?

Also, one of their four website feature photos is the dreaded sailboat boom.

i made something like this for myself last month. figured when my board comes down on my head it would take the sting out a bit...
when it is windy and overhead i like a helmet.
if you have ever been clocked by a SUP that got rocketted you would know why...

In all the moments that a bump cap could have been useful my hat would have already been torn off by the whitewater.  So I'll pass, but this seems like a great idea in general

I was clocked in the head once by my downwind board. I went off the front, and was underwater remembering that the board was upwind of me, so my plan was to stay underwater for a good 10 seconds, and then come up with my hands in front of my face. While I was face down underwater, a gust picked the board up, spun it through the air, and it came down on the rail with enough force to drive the rail underwater into the back of my head. Felt close to blacking out.
I don't think that a standard cap would stay on during a fall like that, so I think the key to making this work would be any cap with a chin strap; the classic kook hat that will stay in place through any wipeout. I have an FCS hat that should work great with these liners.

Was just thinking of something exactly like that except made out of D3O or Poron. I've seen D3O beanies for snowboarders.

Wasn't paying attention to the board/foil and got smacked lightly on my face. Luckily I was wearing a bucket had and some large Oakleys. The frames broke (or so I thought, just the temple disconnected) and the bucket hat lip prevented the hit a little more.

Yes, this was a very light smack but still left a bruise on my eyebrow. A little protection is better than none at all.

Guess this could work but would prefer a hat:

Guess there's also a D3O baseball hat:

I'm absolutely in love with D3O as a product.  I have a pair of mountain biking knee pads with the stuff and it really works.

I found some D3O options out there.

comes with a strap, looks a little like a ball cap
https://www.ribcap.com/

kooky, but it'll stay on:

even more kooky.  might as well wrap it in tinfoil, it'll look cooler

and yes, I spent a little too much time searching for D3O caps

Those are some FUGLY d3o products! LOL

Same here. I have some light XC knee/elbow pads for mtb. I usually buy them after a bad fall, then slowly phase them out of wearing as I get lazy and it gets hotter.  ::)   ;D  Then the cycle repeats.
