ONE SUP Edge Pro 12’ 6” x 22”
« on: June 27, 2019, 08:21:46 AM »
I found a used, 12’ 6” x 22” ONE SUP Edge Pro and had a couple of questions that the company selling the board has not been able to answer. I wondered if maybe someone (Jacko???) could help me.

First of all, is there any way to determine what year the board was manufactured? The board looks in pretty decent shape, but I would like to know what year it is. I’m thinking the Pro wasn’t manufactured until 2018, but I don’t know this for sure. Any way to tell the year of the board?

Secondly, is there any way to know whether the board is the “full carbon standard” or the “full carbon ultra light”? I suppose the weight of the board is one way to tell, but I don’t know what the weights should be for those two constructions. Is weight the only way to tell or are there other ways?

And finally, I haven’t tested this board yet, and don’t even know if I’ll be able to stand up on a 22” board. But I already own two ONE SUP Evo’s (12’ 6” x 24" and 12’ 6” x 26”) and I really like them. They are well constructed and paddle really nicely. So I won’t know for sure how I feel about this board until I actually try it, but I would like to know more about it before I make the drive to go and test paddle.

Any other comments about this specific board would also be appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Mate, only a few of these really ever made with 14ft boards taking over and 12'6 market getting pushed to the side. The 12'6 x 22 Edge pro is a great board and very fast for a 12'6.

This board would be coming up to 2 years old as we made it for Angie for when we came to the US for BOP and Battle of the bay, Ang loves this board and we also made one for Kenny Kaneko in Japan and while they were racing 12'6 boards he loved it!!

It would be ultralight 100%, it was made before we started adding the ultralight logo so this would be why it does not have it.

Other than that its a great little board for flatwater, it has more of a mid recess maybe compared to the full depth recess we do on todays boards but if you can stand on it and want a fast 12'6 i think you would really like this board.

Thanks so much Jacko for getting back to me. A couple of follow up questions if you don't mind. It sounds to me like you are saying the board is no longer in production, but it looks to me like it is still listed on your website (https://www.oneoceansports.com/edge-pro) Is it just that it hasn't been removed from the web page?

I'm also wondering how much is sacrificed if the board is "ultra light"? I've previously owned boards that would dent or scratch if they got within 100 feet of a pebble and I don't want to go that route again. I've been really impressed with the build quality on both my current Evo's. They are sturdy, well made boards and I'm just wondering what "ultra light" does for the construction? Is this going to be a really fragile board?

It's still in the line up and can still be ordered new it just has not had a production update to a 2.0 board yet. A lot of the 12'6 boards we have been making these days have been a little more custom side as it is a alot smaller class now they it used to be.

Ultra light is still really good and i would say you will hardly notice the difference in durability from your EVO boards.

That's pretty wide by today's standards. Here's one that will test your balance.
It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

Middle-aged guy on a 12-6 x22”... what could possibly go wrong? :)

But it would be great balance training. And you’ll be reminded of your advancing years with every stroke. Which is always a pleasure :)

I paddled a 21.5” wide board a few years back. I didn’t fall in. But I’ve never been so slow in my life! I had ducks overtaking me. But then I’m just a wobbly old fool. No doubt if I was in my 20s again it would have been no issue.

Just make sure that you get it at a price where resale wouldn’t hurt you too much. Demo if you can. Not many people can go comfortably under 23”. Or need to, really.

Talking of reselling a 12'6 narrow race board. There seem to be so many on offer these days. Likely as female racers are changing boards after a couple of seasons or are moving to 14'.

Yes, I know. I’m really not sure about this and I will have the opportunity to test paddle. The narrowest I’ve paddled to date is my 24”, so going to 22” may be an adventure. And then of course this is also a dugout, which I’m also really not sure about.

But having said all the above, this board does kind of intrigue me, and I have been curious to know how I would do on a narrower board, so the timing seems right. As they say, nothing ventured, nothing gained!

I think reselling any used board is difficult these days and it’s even worse for 12’ 6” boards. Certainly not like it was some time ago, when you could buy a board and if you didn’t like it just turn around and sell it.

It’s actually been a while since I bought a new board. I am quite happy with the boards I have, but as I said in my earlier post, I have been wondering what it would be like to go narrower.

There are definitely some almost 'Antique SUP's' on CL these days. Yellowed epoxy, big old wood stringer and early evolution designs. How time flies.... But they still sell.... at the right price ;)

You’ve got to buy it, Quickbeam, just to find your limits. A 23” wide board is my limit on flatwater. In the sea it’s more like 25. Any narrower and I’m just not having fun any more. But the only way I discovered this was by going too narrow, and then having to accept my limitations.

...I have been wondering what it would be like to go narrower.

So what's your motivation? is it just how narrow can you go and testing your limits, or
are you also looking to be super fast in case you can handle that width?
in progress...
