Squall! Seen from the inside
« on: June 17, 2019, 11:42:25 AM »
Here is a really interesting video of what happens when a squall hits you and how much time you get. Seen in real time.

Hint: when you see that kind of sh!t unfurling in the sky ... batten the hatches. Like hardcore.

This was this past Saturday, during a regatta on alpine Lake Leman, Geneva. The biggest, by participants, inland race in the world. Storm warnings were out 24h before. So everyone outthere knew. But still, when it hit...

Kudos to the great seamanship out there. 212 yachts abandoned the race, 49 dis-masted, 3 sunk, gusts of 60 knots measured. No casualties among race participants.

One woman died in the squall. Not part of the race but on a "pleasure craft", near Geneva.

Vid is 8 mins. Watch 'til the end. It's kind of funny. The crew handles it very well... until...

For the 4 min version watch the first few secs and then skip to about 03:45 when it really starts to honk.

I guess no one drown? If they did, it sounds like they did in good sport ::)  Great for the sail and mast business!!!

"A fireworks display of distress flares: that's what the lake looked like after 17:00.

Everybody likes precise statistics: crew members overboard, broken masts, sunken boats... these statistics don't exist as sailors don't always report their problems, minor or major. Boats with broken masts don't always return to port yelling from the rooftops. What we know for certain is that there were 212 abandonments; rumors suggest 40 some broken masts and sailmakers can expect a lucrative season!

Several sailboats sunk, including Toucans Baloo and Ex-Psaros. Realtime, one of the race favorites lost its mast while five M2s capsized. Finally, the Libera Principessa flipped over and its crew recovered without injury.

Several crew members fell overboard. The safety teams, coordinated from the SNG and distributed over the lake, provided exceptional work and did all they could to assure crews' safety."
It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

That vid reminds me of once when we headed off on a downwinder and it started off very calm but we were soon hit with a 50 knot squall that sent us off 90 deg from our original corse.

For a while there they must have been on pace for the win... I’ve never seen a sailboat leave a powerboat wake behind ...
