Miami, So Florida summer surf?
« on: June 14, 2019, 07:42:51 PM »
Miami, in July and August. Is it as bad as I think?

Should I just go to that cable park in the Keys and learn to foil while I’m there?

I’ll be there for work and seeing friends. Wondering if there’s even knee high waves to longboard. I’ll grovel and ride about anything so what’s the story?

Even in the wind season, waves in Miami are more what I would call chop. Random storms send wind swell but it's been over 2 weeks and I haven't even had enough to go foil sup let alone ride a long board. If you can head a little North, from Jupiter and up usually has a better swell to ride.

The cable Park at other side can get you dialed in on the foil easily and you can learn to dock start there also.

If you are VERY lucky you may get some early Hurricane or a tropical swell, but even then there is a really tight window for waves to reach South Beach as the Bahamas block a lot of the swells
. I lived there for 7 years and rarely surfed there in the winter and never in the summer, id always head north.
I windsurfed when I lived there as wind was pretty dependable.

I spent few months in the area last winter/spring. the only thing I could catch
Was weed and even that was on my 16 footer.

There was one stormy weekend that brought some big stuff but it was pointless since everyone and their wives were in the water fighting for some action.

Have fun honing your foiling skills :)

Oh I don’t smoke... ;)

Thanks man, I’m gonna do my gig, see my friends, see some sites and surf when I get home. Maybe paddle some flat water in the keys too.

Florida Bay Outfiiters has a guide to some launch spots. I usually paddle Key Largo. Waiting for foot to heal so I can get back out.

As an option, bring a mask and snorkel with your "Keys" paddle trips. Water clarity improves that time of year.

Visit Coral Castle near Homestead.

If there is tropo swell during those months, I'll be in Stuart. Always fun to join up with other SUS riders.

Yes, unless you like sun abd heat, but it's only a little over 2.5 hour drive North to find some knee high's. Unless of course there is a big storm just passing offshore to the North.

Thanks guys, this is great stuff.

I love snorkeling and freediving so thx for the reminder. And yeah if there anything in the water I’ll def post up and reach out to surf.

Keep the other tips coming too. Hope to make this a good general travel thread for the summer.

I was able to get out today on an Axis 102 and get some good pumps in on North Miami Beach area. It's been over 3 weeks since we had anything so keep an eye on the weather before you come and then you'll know what to bring and expect.
