Surfline vid shows me nearly hit by party boat
« on: May 26, 2019, 06:38:23 AM »
Was paddling back into Morro Bay Harbor yesterday (May 25) and was almost clipped by a cattle boat heading out. To see on Surfline rewind- yesterday May 25, video clip of Morro Bay Harbor Entrance, clip starts at 7:06 am, you can first see me trying to come in around the North Jetty at 6:20 minutes into the video. Starts to get really hairy 8 minutes into the video clip. Wind conditions were nice yesterday so decided to paddle out to the Whistle Buoy outside the harbor. Boat traffic pushed me way north coming back in, so decided to try to sneak in along the North Jetty (to avoid boat traffic). As I was scrambling to get in between the jetty and the green "can," the party boat Fiesta banked a hard right and headed straight at me. Then, instead of going around, it decided to go between me and the jetty. I was probably about 50 yards from the jetty. Thought I was dead. Looked up to watch it go by. Of course the boat behind the Fiesta buzzed me from the other side, just to make it more exciting. Told the Harbor Patrol about the incident. Not sure of that outcome. Kinda thought I was overreacting until I saw the Surfline vid. Now I am just pissed.

I get really annoyed by power boats that seem to think that as long as they don't physically run over me they have yielded right of way.

You should share that video with the harbor patrol, sheriff's office, coast guard, or whomever's responsible for patrolling the safe operation of vessels and watercraft by all parties moving within the harbor and its surrounding waterways.

That's so cool you're on the rewind! Someone once told me they spotted me out on there.
Inlet traffic can be scary stuff. Be careful out there all alone. Barnegat Inlet here in NJ gets
REALLY busy in summer. Almost best to do it in Sept and Oct when it quiets down a bit.
One could go into a mall in Kansas and ask a teenager "What is a surfer looking for?, and the answer will always be, "The perfect wave"
