BIG Shark Encounter off LBI New Jersey
« on: May 24, 2019, 05:39:27 AM »
Hey Guys,

A friend of mine Paul Sykes got "Bumped Hard" (NOT BIT!!)by a large shark while body boarding a couple of days off of Ship Bottom
Lots of bunker in the water (not to mention fishermen...but that is another story)

Be careful out there!

You East Coasters are IN TROUBLE.

Although Creek would say "You're all freaking out over nothing."

Just don't ride a boogie board:

Just in time for Memorial Day, oceanic researchers said they have tracked a great white shark off Connecticut’s coast, the first time ever that the prodigious predator of summer movie fame has been pinpointed in Long Island Sound.

Connecticut!!!!  :o  What's next Ohio?

I have been a couple of miles off the NC coast the last couple of weekends and might be going 3 on Monday; paddling out to artificial reefs to fish.

A shark? They are reporting a "cluster":

They are pretty far out and it isn't unusual.

"They are attracted by shiny jewelry and colorful swimsuits..."

Have not heard that before... so avoid looking like a giant spinning lure 8)

More on the Longe Island scare...

https://www.trackingsharks.com/great-white-tracked-in-long-island-sound-maybe-maybe-not/

Jim
That article said the Long Island sound of New Jersey. From other articles it seems that the shark “might” of been between Connecticut and NJ in the Long Island sound. That news thread seems like a silly overreaction as one shark getting a ping in an area that large doesn’t seem scary.  The bump in NJ seems much more scary. Did the boarder see anything?

Saw my first GW last spring on an outer reef. Around 3 meters, so just a "baby." Thought I'd be way more spooked than I was. Tried to follow along as it swam along the bottom, just off the reef (me staying on top of the reef in the shallower water). After a while, it just moved off. Only reason I saw it was because I was on a SUP. Makes me wonder how many times I haven't seen them. I see Black Tips all the time, and the occasional Tiger, but the White was next level.

The other way around for me. GW's don't bother me, but Tiger sharks do.
It's not overhead to me!

I'm gonna stop reading this thread after beasho. I try to stay away from sharks!
One could go into a mall in Kansas and ask a teenager "What is a surfer looking for?, and the answer will always be, "The perfect wave"

ICHABOD

If you wanna see a shark
First you have to come to the Ocean
2) They are there and mostly unseen ie predator
3) Chop up some bunker (10/20#) and throw it in the water slowly for an hour or 2

YOU'LL SEE SHARKS
