SUP Surfing in the Mentawai's 2017- Boat Trip videos
« on: April 24, 2017, 01:08:00 PM »
We recently came back from an awesome Mentawai Islands SUP surfing Boat trip in early April 2017.  We got a ton of footage of our international team riders and going through and editing it takes a lot of time.   My plan is to put together daily trip video log (some of which are quite long) and will try to post a video for each of the 10 days on a weekly basis.
We will also post one short video of the trip as well as team rider profiles and some "how to SUP" surf videos and I will post them here as they are finished.
Here is the first day video where we surf at Lance's left on the first morning after motoring overnight and talk about traveling to Padang Indonesia with over 20 boards.

That was a very interesting video. I'm really taking a liking to videos filmed from drones. Great slow motion action too.

Thanks for sharing it.

I'm still working on the daily video log edits but for now, here is the team rider profile for our newest team rider.
Ty Judson is an up and coming 17 year old Australian who trains hard and enjoys racing and is also a talented SUP surfer.  Look for his name in the race results, he is signed up for the M2O race this summer.

Good stuff Robert.. thanks for the vids!
I love the travel and personal stuff that makes it a learning experience... not just surf clips.

What a great trip  ;D

I finally got around to editing the second day video log of our boat trip. We were moored at Macaroni's resort and SUP surfed and foil boarded at KFC's. The Bintangs flowed on the second night and things got a bit crazy.  The trip was 10 days long, so I got some more editing to do...

Gotta say Robert....I love the way your logo dresses up the boards.... very cool.
It reminds me of the early SUP deckpad work, that is done so artfully in Hawaii.

Oh yeah.... nice break dancing  :)

Nice footage. A question about the cameras used. I'm guessing you used a GoPro for the in the water shots, a 4K drone, and maybe a DSLR (70D or 80D) from the boat?
It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

Thanks TallDude.  The drone shots are from a DJI Phantom 4 drone, the watershots were not shot with gopro, Steve Dewell and John Bly both had nice cameras with water housings, not sure of the camera models though.

Hi BPlanet
Looking to head to the Mentawais in December/Jan for medium wave SUP adventure.  Recommendations?  I am 63, 200 lb intermediate, my son is considerably better than I am at 21 y.o.  but no pro.

Look forward to any suggestions you have.  My criteria are no crowds, SUP friendly, intermediate waves.

If you want no crowds you need a boat captain that can take you to remote spots, away from the land based camps, and go out for dawn patrols.
Some of the popular spots get surprisingly busy but there are plenty of "B grade" breaks that nobody surfs.  Watch out for the sharp reef, I still have scars from the reef and Pete had to get his lips stiched up, see video above.
