Big guy board 250 lbs?
« on: May 20, 2019, 03:32:38 PM »
I have a buddy trying to get into the sport. He's 250 lbs, any recommendations for a board for him? It's going to be ridden in Florida so choppy wind swell conditions. He can also get something made but liters come into question.  I'm thinking 8 foot is the longest he should go.

That's a loaded question (pun intended).  A safe place to start would be using the same volume board that he typically sups and then going down from there.  When I was 230 I was SUPing a 8-0x29x41/4 board, but my foil board was 6-2x29x5ish.  So it really depends.  I'd be more concerned about finding the right foil. You're talking about a big man on small weak waves.  It's going to require a lot of lift to make foiling enjoyable.  He could always just add a Tuttle box to whatever he's currently riding.  Its a less expensive way to get through the learning curve.

Good luck
Evan

He's on some big 12 foot log of a sup. He's a good surfer so I was more concerned with what type of liters he would need. I'm going to push him towards an Axis 102 or have him wait till the Neil Pryde XL is released. I just don't want him to get something not right for him. I told him he might need to just shave down the walls of a small skiff and use that.

At 240 lbs I learned on a converted 7'0x30 120L board and a Gong XXL Allvator foil. The board I already rode comfortably before I had the foil box installed, so I'm not sure I'd recommend going that small to just anyone. The Gong foil I would recommend to anyone in that weight class, there is nothing else out there at that size and price point. No frills and certainly not high performance, but it is super stable and generates the lift you need for a 250 lbs at a relatively low speed.

no big guy is ever disappointed by the Gofoil Maliko200...😁

he gets anything else and sooner or later he will try a friends GoFoil and say....MAN i wish i had gotten the Maliko200 😤

not going to have any fun if you cant get airborne and the Maliko200 gets you airborne the best

Thank you guys for all the info. Any one ride the Axis 102 and the gong or go foil maliko? I have the Axis and love it for 1 foot and under. Haven't had a chance at the go foils yet. Looks like prices will start to drop soon tho on all foils. Neil Pryde is making great gear at a fraction of the price and even cloud 9 is going direct sales. Amazing time to be in this sport with so many options on the horizon

I'd talk to Dwight SupsurfMachines. He makes great boards and his foilboard... ;)
 He's in Cocoa Beach Fla.

You asked about Gong foil. Here's a review that might be helpful. I'm happy with mine. Your friend should be good with the XL 90cm and maybe the XXL 100cm

"As mentioned in the other thread, my mate ordered a 3 wing setup from Gong.
M, L , XL with (I think a 70mm and 80mm mast).

Most of this will be a comparison between the Gofoil Kai, Iwa, 200 24 mast set I have.
Ill add increments as I ride all the wings, different boards etc. sorry no pics right now, but Ill try to get some comparison shots to upload when I can.

The M is a bit bigger than the Kai. Not by much
The L is a bit bigger than the Iwa. Not by much
The XL is about the same as the 200.

The finish is nice, actually nicer and more precise than my Gofoil....Im not sure how old mine is, but the Maliko stab looked like it was drawn by crayon until I cleaned it up.
They come in a nice carry case.
The wings are a bit heavier than Gofoil.
The wings are a bit Flatter than Gofoil. NOT MALIKO 160 FLAT, but a bit less anhedral.
They arent copies of the Gofoil in outline or profile, but are quite similar in most respects.

I only rode the XL today. Board was a 40 choad I shaped. First up I surfed my M200 on a nice light 44 of my construction. Wave was a 2 wedge with whitewash takeoffs. Easy wave especially for 2fors. Had fun.

Strapped on the XL and repeated.

Gong was lifty, maybe a tad faster (Id say def faster than the og Maliko stab). I needed to move it further up in the boxes compared to the 200.

It didnt roll over as easily as the 200 (not by much) but it did yaw more easily with the flatter wing etc. minor adjustment to technique on my part and it was all good.

I got a nice pump run on it, and it did every thing it shouldve done.

So far so good! A bargain for the price

That's great info on the gong stuff. I'd love for my buddy to get a board from Dwight. His stuff is the best out there. I have a 6'4"X30" from him and waiting on a 6'11". He's super busy these days tho plus as a first board he's not going to need much performance. Hopefully AWSI this year will have a bunch of foils to demo and surf expo also. It'll be nice to get an on hands comparison of foils at the same time same conditions.
