Huawei
« on: May 20, 2019, 11:57:52 AM »
Here is an interesting article on Huawei if you want a quick look at the scope of the company and the potential impacts of the recent US ban.

Huawei is the world’s largest provider of telecom equipment.

In terms of smartphones, their rise has been incredible.

Enlightening.  And I'm surprised at Apple's relatively low world wide market share. Judging from my little corner of that world, one would guess more like 70% than 16%.

Also interesting to note (when you think of the leverage that China has in this conflict) that Xiomi, Huawei, Oppo and Vivo are all Chinese companies.  There are also others such as ZTE (which is actually Huawei as well) that would be in the "others" category in the graph above.

This article is a little more detailed.  It points out bot that China already has an OS to compete with Android and iOS and:

The Chinese government wants to retaliate by making it more expensive for U.S. companies to import lithium, a key component in batteries, especially electric car batteries. Like other key items needed for world trade (think steel, for instance), China has the market cornered on this one. They produce 90% of the world's rare earth materials.
