Fin repair
« on: May 19, 2019, 05:28:03 PM »
Have some quad fins that need some love to the leading edge. The fins in question are JL glass with honeycomb. damage is about 1/8-1/16 inch.
Any recomendations on how to repair gauges?

TOOLATE,

Fin repair is a great no wave (or in are case no wind too) activity.
Real simple... All you need is Epoxy RezTech (comes in a tube we have it at the shop) Packaging tape and good stand paper

Clean up the chips on fins with sand paper
On reverse side place 1 pc of packaging tape (sticky side up)
Put rez on fin (goes on like toothpaste) NOT TO MUCH Smooth out as best you can
Fold over (carefully) the packaging tape working out all air bubbles as you go till it is folded over and sticking on both sides
Let Rez set.
Remove tape and LIGHTLY SAND (it will work harden top of resin) to fair shape

If you need rez PM me for zoner discount

Thanks Jim!
not sure i follow about the tape. Stichy side UP? so the shiny non sticky part is what you wrap onto the rez tek?

TooLate,

I mean the EXACT opposite The sticky side is touching the rez and folds over working out air bubbles then "Sticking" to the opposite side
GREAT way to fix fins

I think you took it other way around. I hope Jim mean to say put a piece of tape on one side of the fin so it would make a bottom of the chip you trying to fill, leave some extra take as a flap, then fill the "cavity and close the tape flap on the upper side of the fin.

edit: guess Jim is typing faster than me lol

Question on topic:  is Solarez Epoxy OK for this purpose? thx

solarez is fine for this, as is any epoxy with a ton of micro-balloons---

best tho, is cheap tootsie roll plumbers' epoxy--glove up, wet fingers and you can apply it, and shape it very close to final desired result--like modeling clay--sands easily--if youre anal, then clear coat it with quality epoxy for a final sand

not sure how repair will affect a balsa carbon honeycomb quadraxial performance band, but i worry that's all hype ive paid a lotta dough to buy into!!

hey---at least i think i love my harley inglesby's---they sure look nice on my boards!

https://harleyinglebysurf.com/fcs-ii-hi-quad-set/

run the quad on my starby, the tri on my creek, tri on the barra--havent switched around enough in decent conditions to really comment on differences--and with all my gear, if there's any problem or poor performance, chance of it being the gear that's the problem, is less than zero---operator incompetence renders any commentary useless!

Thanks for ideas all!
I installed some Futures Rasta Quad on my JL SG.
Not quite used to the feel yet. The profile is pretty much the same as the OEM. but they are much faster down the line, and turn a tad less easily. Speed Is what i was looking for I guess but...
