Any thoughts on this Kings 14' board?
« on: May 18, 2019, 09:45:20 PM »
I surfed a Bark Vapor 14' x 26" (I think on the width) today in what would otherwise be mediocre surf and had a blast. I found this Kings 14' board for sale and am considering buying it, but I don't know much about this type of board so wondering if anyone has any info on it, either the model (or if custom) or the shape?

Planning to use it in small summer surf and possibly down winders.

I'm guessing it's older since it doesn't have the new style bulbous nose? And that old school handle? All I know about it is that it's 14' x 28". I'm worried that's a bit too wide but hey it's nice to relax sometimes, ha.

It's now resting happily on my car rack! It's even more beautiful than in pics. It's s hollow style construction, not foam. It has a few weak soft spots on the top of the rails just forward of the paddlers feet, almost like a partial tiny buckle. No sign of it on the underside. Currently covered with rail tape patches. The previous owner said the board would flex there especially when going upwind.

My plan is to sand it down and put down a layer of carbon along the top and side of the rail. I'm hoping I don't need to pull up the deck pad since that's a pain but also because the board currently looks so beautiful. But if I do, does anyone have any tricks to removing deck pads?

And let me know if anyone has tips on the repair, most of my glassing experience comes from surfskis and even then I'm pretty hacky. I can post pics when I start excavating if anyone wants to see.

You Scored!
It looks like a 2013 or 14  Downwinder 14 model. I've followed the Kings boards for a lot of years, but I've never known Dave to do a hollow / molded board. I'm about 99% sure it's 1 lb foam with an S-Glass
and Vector Net composite. Dave does V-bag some of his boards, but like I said, I've never heard him talk about doing a molded hollow board?

BTW, It did look like it had bucked slightly when I first saw the pictures. That's one of the problems with a long stringer less board and no Carbon Fiber to strengthen it along the rails. Specially right in the middle. The cracks along the top rail are where it compressed. It's worth a look under the pad just where those cracks are. A multi-tool will take the deck pad off fast. Lots of threads on it here.

It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

Thanks so much for the info. I'm probably just wrong about the construction, I'm pretty clueless with dw and race boards.

wB, I am sure I was about #28 in line if you were not taking it home.  But, I spotted what TD saw.  Secure it before you end up with a 2pc travel board.  Good find!

$200!?!?   Great score.

Feel free to contact Dave Daum directly and I'm sure he'll be very happy to give you all the info you want on the board.  Agree with TD, I can't imagine it would be hollow construction.

I really enjoyed the King's board I owned--perhaps a little less durable than other 14s I've owned but there's always that tradeoff with performance.

If you need to remove a deckpad, best trick I've found (here on the Zone) is to soak towels with Denatured alcohol and lay them on top overnight.  I usually tape down some plastic over it to seal things off.  Always a bit of goo to contend with after the fact but the bulk of it scrapes off pretty easy.

If you wanna make a quick $50, I'd give you $250 for it!

Man I don't get tired of looking at this board.  You can eventually retire it to a wall.  A big wall...
