Blue Planet Bumprider 14 x 28 and 14 x 30 questions.
« on: May 13, 2019, 09:39:24 AM »
The Bumprider recently came on my radar for a dedicated rough cruiser and downwind board, and I have found a couple for sale in Canada.

I noticed on the blue planet website that the 14 x 28" is no longer listed, but the options I have found are the 28" and 30" wide. I'm weighing between 210-215 pounds right now, and wondering if anyone in this weight range has some feedback on these boards?

Thanks,

Luc Benac

Hey Mel,
Talk to Arne on FB https://www.facebook.com/arne.gutmann?fref=pb&hc_location=friends_tab
He just got one and he is a long distance and touring paddler and downwinder.

Cheers,

Thanks Luc.

I sold my Glide, so looking for something similar for a stable go to board for rough water touring and down winding. Strongly considering the Sunova Expedition right now after getting some feedback from Norm. Maybe a 28" wide bump rider and 30" wide Sunova for the long tours.

I’ve used both the 28” and 30”.  I’m at 190 lbs  so less than your window.   I would think the 28” would be totally fine for your purposes. The 30” is super stable and would be good if you were touring and packing gear. But I think the 30” gives up something in performance if your intended use is downwinding.  On the other hand, 30" may be more pleasant depending on how rough is the "rough water touring". Surfing swells is one thing, but dealing with heavy cross chop/cross swells is another.

I’m surprised the 28” is not on the website.  I thought that was BPS’ mainstay, with the 27” labelled “Speed” and the 30” more beginner oriented. Maybe BPS’ move from 28” to 27” reflects the perception that the 28” was relatively too stable for the 'performance' downwind board, and there was more performance to be eked out of the equation. Only Robert could tell.  And speaking of Robert, the Bumprider is the result of the shaper actually downwinding the board and making incremental changes. That’s a pretty good pedigree.

Yes Norm really like his Expedition 28.5. I am going to try the 27" at some point but having no $, it is not a rush.

The newer 2019 Bump rider production models only come in 27" and 30" wide, we do offer custom orders in any width and have made a few 29" ones for those that were torn between 28" and 30".  Arne loves his 28" wide one, he posts pics almost daily, check his FB page linked above.
The 30' wide is very stable and a bit slower in light wind but we found it can actually actually be faster in rough conditions, check out the narrated video where we are riding 27,28 and 30" wide Bumprider versions.

I have the 27" carbon Bump Rider and love it. I bought it thinking I was going to just downwind on it. Then I started surfing and cruising on it so much that downwind became a secondary purpose. If I would have known I would go down that road from the start, I would have bought the 30" wide board in the bamboo and glass lay-up...in fact, I may just buy another one, as I like it that much.

Had a DW run on the 14x27. messy conditions, full winter gear 200LB+
This is a fun board for sure, a good, stable fin like the LA Spartan for DW is key.

I’m 185lbs and love my 14 x 27” Bump Rider for upwind/downwind sessions. If any doubt I’d go for the wider board.

Thanks guys. At 97 kilos+and my skill level, I’m going 28” wide minimum. When I lose the 10 pounds of winter flab, it will get easier as well.

I asked about that killer sale Jimmy Lewis is having but the 14 x 28”have all sold on the mainland, and the M-14 is sold out on the mainland in the 28” too. The Bumprider seems like a very good option that does well all-around. Anyone have a comparison between the M-14, Rail and the Bumprider?

I have had great communication with The Blue Planet team in Hawaii and Canada and Jimmy Lewis has been very prompt in getting back to me as well. Sunova reps in Canada and Creek stateside have been easy to get answers from for my interest in the Expedition model and other boards.
