SUP/Surf Foiling at Doheny
« on: May 17, 2019, 04:58:22 PM »
Hey guys and gals,

Just wanted to pass on some chatter I overheard from the DoHo guards. Overheard a surfer complaining about foil boarders in the water and the lifeguard said they are trying to figure out some rules/zones. SUPís are already supposed to stay south of the hammer/small jetty. They are considering the same for foils or pushing them even farther south by the Capo reef area. Iím sure everyone has their opinion on it but just wanted to pass on the info for those that foil in that area.

Thanks for the heads up.

Considering that SUP's have been restricted at Doheny for years now, it's not a huge shock that foils may soon suffer a similar fate.  I'm surprised to have seen foils out in the regular lineup for so long now....

I would think Capistrano Reef's soft waves would be a good foil spot; Infinity owner Steve Boehne was telling me that very thing the other day.  Longtime locals like TallDude would be better qualified than me to add to commentary...

Right now with the temporary sand bar in front of the river mouth (due to all the rain), a lot of prone surfers are surfing south of the hammer. It's a fun false point break right that everyone is on. Once that sand get distributed down the beach, the break will be back to normal. As long as the foiler's stay south of the hammer with the SUP's it may ease the tension? All it will take is one accident (lots of beginners there) and the State Parks will probably create a rule or ban foils. The city beaches don't really have any good foil spots so I don't see them banning anything. They never put any restrictions on SUP's.

Pshaw, when it's working, we go out to the outer buoys, foil in for several hundred yards on some really nice energy there...and then turn out to let the logs on the inside have them from there. But I can see foiling in, and amongst then as getting to be a problem.

While I did foil around the Hammer last spring when it wasn't crowded yet, I actually had more SUPers and proners come over to inquiry about it than I did have complain about it. In fact, I'd say that at that time (haven't been to Pooheny since the rains yet, and won't for a couple more months), I was better received on the foil than I remember having been when I SUPed there the few times that I did.

But I'm sure the novelty of them has worn off by now, and it's best to stay far away from the proners now...whether that be well outside, or well south...but trying to mix it up with them inside is a just another recipe for disaster there now, and why? It's way better way on the outside anyway, where the longboarders can't even get into them, and we've had our fun long before we're ever close to them...and I'd hate to tangle up with one that had a dog on the nose of their board anyway; I can only imagine that that probably wouldn't play out too well.  ;) :D

Unfortunately with the development of the sandbar and a really good right, the area south of the river has become crowded and a more aggressive area to surf. Was in the water this past Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday with shortboards, funboards, longboards, Costco team riders (wave storms), and SUPís. Even though itís a sup area, some surfers were definitely upset that SUPís were there.

I surfed there Sunday evening just as the swell hit and it was big, uncrowded, and awesome. BUT, how the sand bar has effected the line up is short boarders. The steeper wave is good with short boards. Not your regular long board crowd that is typically at DoHo.
