Go to a dealer and get the mechanical key that goes with your car. Take that surfing.
Leave the fob, wrapped in aluminum foil for security, stashed in the car.

I have a mechanical key for my truck. With that said, I've always been aware of sun exposure over time can lead to skin cancer.

I wear a Magellan long sleeve shirt to protect my skin on my arms when I'm sup surfing. This shirt has a zippered pocket and this is where I store my truck key.

My electronic SAAB key has a metal key inside it that pulls out. It won't start the car but it unlocks the doors. I leave the electronic key in the car and wear the metal key on a string around my neck when wearing the wetsuit or put it in my trunks pocket in summer.

I absolutely hate electronic keys. What an idiotic invention that was. Same goes for car alarms.

My Toyota key has two electric components.    The keyless entry part and the "electronic chip" that allows the car to start.   I removed the keyless entry stuff,  but the "chip" remains.   I put a dab of epoxy over the chip.  I wear the key around my neck for all water sports.  JP

I always bring a phone on the water with me in a soft waterproof case. I put my key in there too.

If not shielded with alu foil, the fob can be activated from the outside with an electronic gizmo that will enable a thief to unlock and start remotely.

My F350 has keyless entry--leave the keys inside. My twenty-year-old POS Xterra on Maui has a simple key that I wear around my neck on a piece of kite line. At least once a year I get asked: "what does the key mean". No one would steal my truck but they might take the stuff inside. I've left it in Maliko Gulch with the door and hatch wide open. No one parks their car in the gulch anymore--sketchville.

I've discovered that the magnetic closure waterproof bags work perfectly and last a very long time. I carry my phone in one, and if I needed to, I'd stuff a key in there.

I've used this thing: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B076BF2YD6/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Works well, I think you'd be able to stick it in there with just a little angle.

"what does the key mean". No one would steal my truck but they might take the stuff inside...

And put it on bricks while at it ;D I've seen it
in progress...

One of my friends has a 2" hitch receiver on his truck so when he goes down to Surfside, parks on the beach and then goes into the surf, he hides his truck key in a device called a HitchSafe. Watch the two videos below for installation and changing the code.

Thanks. Apparently my ford focus does NOT make or sell  a non electric key .
I tried a lock box but noticed that it was SO EASY to feel the tumblers. My son who is 12 demonstrated he could pick it with his eyes closed....

I see surfers all of the time stash keys on the exterior of their car and wonder why their cars get broken into.  I show them what I use if they are parked near me (Portable Master Lock key stash box).  The one I use, does not a fit a key fob.  I hang it on my tow hanger near my bumper.  I have been using mine for over a decade with no problem (Hondas).  I used to bring my keys in pockets, but didn't like the salt water gunking up my locks.
However, this adjustable model fits a keyfob:
https://www.amazon.com/Master-Lock-5420D-Combination-Adjustable/dp/B07FD2N88X/ref=sr_1_fkmrnull_1?keywords=Master-Lock-5420D-Combination+fob&qid=1557578869&s=gateway&sr=8-1-fkmrnull
I have heard that storing a key fob in a car can drain a battery (long periods like camping), so wrapping it in aluminum foil is a good idea.
I used to use a sedan with a trunk and would store my wallet and remaining keys in there (with interior trunk release cable disabled or locked).  Now I use a SUV with hatchback, no trunk.  Makes me nervous for the smash and grab criminal.  I plan on using something like this to store my remaining keys, phone, and wallet inside the SUV:

@ sflinux

I've heard through the grapevine that a Master-Lock Combination Adjustable lock box is easy to "hack". The video below shows how.

That was interesting.
My problem with those combination locks is my eye sight is so bad I need reading glasses to oven them. I'm glad my 4Runner came with a valet key.
