peeling on surftec board?
« on: May 06, 2019, 07:45:19 AM »
Hi all - has anyone ever seen something like this peeling on a board? It's a used Surftec board I inquired about for my wife.  Haven't been able to go see it (it's 1+ hours away), but thought it was a curious "condition". What would cause this strange layer to peel like that?

Some of the early Surftech boards did not have a glass layer on the outside and were just finished in a clear coat.  I would call this the open face sandwich ;D

(True sandwich construction for a wood lam over EPS is, at the very least, inner glass, wood, then outer glass.)

Would be a very time consuming fix for sure.

We've "FIXED THAT" but it is more trouble than it's worth.

If you wanna give your location I'm SURE someone here can help you.

Same thing happens to older pre-finished wood floors. It's not a 2K epoxy finish. It's just a high gloss polyurethane finish peeling off the epoxy. You might be able to use a stripper, but they've cost me a lot of money in the past.

Salty, If it was cheap enough ... you had the patience ... some gear, you could clearcoat it.  I think you'd be best off finding a better board overall, in case she ended up not quite as excited about this SUP stuff as you   ..or her saying; "Why you buy me this?!".

Thanks for all the replies / info. I'm definitely going to pass on this one (listed for $600!!) - I don't mind a used board, but not looking to have to learn a bunch of new repair skills before she hits the water (I'm good with poly - not so experienced with EPS / Epoxy).

In the interest of full disclosure, this is really a board for both of us. I've "downgraded" to an inflatable SUP to keep at my work for paddling around a nearby pond on my lunch as weather / time allows, but we traded in the primary SUP (Focus) for 2 kayaks about 2 years ago - the thinking being we could kayak together with 2 kayaks, but only one of us could go out at a time with 1 SUP. Well, we've gone kayaking together a sum total of 1 time in the 2 years, so it's time to re-think that equation. On flat / calm days, I feel I'm more inclined to put a sup on the roof and go paddle the local waterways than dealing with the kayak.

Well this little saga had a happy ending - answered a CL ad for a Naish Quest being sold up in NH for $400. Ad didnít have pics, so probably passed over by quite a few (thankfully). Anyhoo - turns out it is a completely unused 2017 10-8 quest with a Werner Tonga paddle & fannypack PFD. A pretty sweet package for less than the sunburned surftec!

Iím back baby!

Hey,

You got a MUCH better board! Congrats.

I'd repost that Werner Paddle and get a decent CARBON paddle.
Just my 2 cents

Most importantly HAVE FUN!

Let this be a lesson - if the CL ad doesn't have pictures, inquire anyhow. You just might get lucky!

I think I'll keep this paddle for now (it's a good go-between for me and the wife) and maybe once I dial in the correct length I'll get a hold of a 2nd fixed length CF paddle.

Stoked! Ride report once I get a chance to get her out (probably just flat water to start).
