Stay unpopular - comment on foiling
« on: May 06, 2019, 06:35:10 AM »
First, I have to say that Robert Stehlik, from 3,000mi away, seems like one of the nicer people on the planet and a big boost for our sport. He's a 'contributor' not just someone branding off his 'legend'.  Having said; the very first wave in a Foil video of his was taken by both a sup-surfer and a foiler. I almost immediately thought; 'The surfer is having a better time!'  The foiler looks to me like the 2019 version of 'going straight'.

When his ride was over, I thought - 'How the fuc is he getting back out all that way?!' I cannon imagine paddling that stubby little shape thru whitewater ..with the additional drag the foil may add  ...that distance?  I'd need to be an Olympic athlete to have that stamina.

I had to keep watching because it is such a beautiful break, but then I saw 'me' at exactly 6:28.  More power to you guys - good luck.

So that was you on the foil falling at 6:28?  That looked dangerously close to colliding with the foil Yikes!

Beautiful spot.

i agree the SUP surfer looks like he's ripping it up more, but as a kite foiler, there's just something about floating 'above' the wave that makes it fun even though you may just be going straight. i'll still take a great day on my surfboard kiting in bigger waves,  or regular SUP surfing in some bigger waves, but how can anyone argue with the foil rides this guy is getting out there? looks awesome. anyone know where that is? (or is it a'secret spot?)

Well OK, if comparing apples to oranges is the point of the thread, compare a sup guy to this...

...kinda silly, huh?

I windsurfed for 10+ years before I took up surfing.

"Why would I want to catch a wave and ride for 20 seconds vs. planing non-stop in 25 knots of wind for 2 hours?" I used to ask myself.

Because surfing is so much fun.  That is why.

Foiling, even going straight, is that much fun.

The foil math is 2X - 1.  Take the size of the wave and multiply by 2 then subtract 1 ft.  A 5ft wave therefore feels like a 9 foot wave.

Because foiling is so fast there is less slashy turning, unless you are on slow, small waves.  Very much like big wave surfing.  You go fast and don't turn (as much) but it is a total rush.   As you get better you do HAVE to turn because you are outrunning the wave covering more water than possible on a surfboard.  When I see surfers now I feel sorry for them being so glued to the whitewater.  They can't escape.

I actually understand...  When I was kiting I'd look at all those Euros that came from Wash DC doing nothing but going back-forth, chattering on flat water with their sailboards. (like some foods—I tried and did not like it) C'hit, with a kite I could race along like a demon ...and FLY! There is clearly a different, elating sensation coming off the water.

No, LB.  That just looks like how I imagine I would look. This clumsy, old fuc would get the hatchet the first time out ...after suffering tachycardia just getting outside.   Cheers.

Foiling is definitely a different animal.  Only a few select pro's can do anything aggressive in the face of a wave on a foil.  It is mostly long drawn out turns but at a much higher speed then on a sup.  It is still a lot of fun when done on the right equipment, in a foil friendly location.  Seems crazy to me that people look for sh*tty small waves to foil when surf is good and firing for sup surfing.

Yes, my point exactly...we have no idea who the foiler and/or the sup guy are in the original video, nor their respective talents or length of time they've been working on either. It'd be like showing an average skilled foiler doing his thing, and a new(er) surfer just starting out on a sup...thus the "apples and oranges" comment.

How about a non-pro with a couple years on a foil carving, pumping, and jumping on a barely "surfable" wave might be a better comparison maybe?

But as you correctly state, "Foiling is definitely a different animal"....and a pretty fun one at that.  :D

Dear god really....you picked Mike Murphy, the guy who invented the airchair.  He has probably more time on a foil than anyone else alive. ...ha...ha...ha....classic.

Hahaha...not Mike Murphy, but close.  ;) ;D

EDIT: OK, so how about this complete foil rookie (couple months experience at the time) from about 10 months, 3 boards, and two foils ago?  :)

Yup. My buddy just ordered a 6'6" Easy Foiler so I can ride it and decide if I want one too... LOL.

My first impression of foil surfing was that it was lame--almost as lame as kite foiling looks--a bunch of kiters tiptoeing around instead of slashing and jumping. I wanted to do it so I could get to downwind foiling, which did not look lame at all. Then I started doing it and felt like a kid again. Nope, no slashing the tops off waves. For that matter, any cutback that I wobble through without overfoiling is a big victory. But I'd rather do it than SUP surf any day. It's a lot more than apples and oranges. It's apples and Messerschmitts.
