Surfing Myanmar biggest tidal bore of the year
« on: April 13, 2019, 08:02:08 AM »
I went on a solo surfing trip in the gulf of Martaban to surf the biggest tidal bore of the year.
Here is the video.

Genial!  Adventure of a lifetime.  How long of a drive to the access point?

That was a very nice video. Plenty of aerial and gopro views. Loved the long length of video also.

While watching the video, the first tidal bore wave reminds me a lot of the small bow tanker waves that a small ship makes when traveling under 10 knots. I enjoy sup surfing these types of small waves on my 11'1" sup.

Thanks for sharing your tidal bore wave video.

That was crazy! The river looks so huge. I'd be scared! And that put out on the river bank looked extra challenging.
Great video. Love the drone scenics. Too bad there's no drone footage of the sup riding. Would need a really experienced drone pilot for that.
One could go into a mall in Kansas and ask a teenager "What is a surfer looking for?, and the answer will always be, "The perfect wave"

Very cool. The thing that strikes me is that it’s one chance... you have to not miss, and then stay on.

That was awesome. Did you spend much time in those standing waves?

Hi surfercook,
Yes the river is really huge and it is always challenging to get out of the water with the tide stream.
Sure I also miss the drone footage of sup riding, I am by myself for everything out there, so little bit difficult, but I have a technique in mind to do it...next time

Hi Dusk Patrol,
Thank you. Yes you're right, it's one chance. I did not succeed on my first attempt...frustration is huge because you've worked so hard to be ready for your meeting with the bore, and within a few seconds, it's over! You just go home and wait for one month to try again if tide is not high enough in the following days...But I always enjoyed the experience in any case

Hi OkiWild,
Thank you. I stayed between 3 and 4 minutes standing. But my objective this time was not to stand as long as possible on the wave (logistics would be different as distance covered would obviously be much longer and it is not much populated along the river banks), it was to find the best spot on the river where the wave would be the biggest and fastest. I would launch from different location to aim at the riding time. I know I can probably stand for 20 to 30 min, and maybe over an hour, I spent enough time on the river to observe all around. Still a lot to experience out there.
