Feet Cramps

(1/2) > >>

SouthCounty:
Anybody else have a problem with feet cramps to the point of almost going numb, maybe it just takes time to get the muscles in my feet to adapt but damn the first paddle around the harbor becomes a bitch, then after standing for a while second paddle around is all good. Any good stretches to do?

OUTSIDEWAVE:
yeah I do  I found that smoothing out the deck apd helps alot.

hbsteve:
Changing the position of the feet helps also.  It doesn't take much.  I stagger my feet slightly.  Every few minutes I change which
foot is in front.

TallDude:
I went through it my first year or two of SUP, but it no longer happens to me. I think it comes from being a little tense while getting use to a boards stability or lack of. My first year of paddling was on 30" or wider touring boards. I dropped down to a 29" wide, then 25", then 23" in the open ocean. There's a little 'break the ice' test I used to put myself through to build my open ocean confidence. I'd get about half a mile out, and just dive into the water. No leash or PFD back then. Just swim for my board. I wouldn't do it purposely if it was windy. If you do that a hand full of times, you'll stop gripping the deck pad with your toes. Just stand relaxed. 8)

PonoBill:
Move your feet closer to the center of the board. Once you get used to having your feet closer to the center you can move around on the board without the teeter-totter feeling. Helps you loosen up.

Hydrate! I'm forcing my7self to drink a lot more water and I mix a little pedialyte in it. Don't do gatorade or sports drinks--the soft drink companies bought them all up and turned them into unhealthy crap. I also added 250 Mg of Magnesium citrate to my pill collection--morning and evening.

Get checked for deep vein insufficiency--it's blood reflux in your leg veins caused by the veins getting too big for the valves to work well. Worth knowing if you have it. If you notice swelling of your feet or legs, or wearing socks leaves a deep line where the sock ends, start wearing compression knee socks a few times a week. I sometime wear them on long paddles or downwinders.

If your board has a domed deck, get rid of it and get a flat deck.

You can also do the golf or tennis ball under you foot roll around thing. Doesn't do much for me, but some people swear by it.
