This is a preview of typical afternoon surf conditions in NJ.  The morning is gutless but glassy then as the day heats up the south wind kicks in and gets choppy.
Yesterday the wind was switching between SSW and SW, it would feel cool then hot.

Crappy days like that are great for practice and improving skills, where you are not missing much if you fall and waste the wave. I'll take any waves at this point. We haven't had any decent surf in over a month. The few times we did have waves, the wind was too strong to paddle against. So far, 2019 is shaping up to be the worst year of all the six years I've been doing standup.

LB, what are you running for fin setup these days? After going back and forth, I've settled on the stock quad.

@ LBsup

I have wave days like that when I go to Surfside, Tx and the waves are not what they are forecasted to be. Still, I have a lot of fun sup surfing those types of waves.

Thanks for sharing this video.

@LBSup - have you tried a shorter paddle? It seems like that one is a bit long

Cool Jason!  Some interesting names to your sup collection, never heard of deadbeat.

Badger, sorry to hear you’ve had such a dry spell, hopefully you’ll get some waves soon.  I’m riding the stock quad fins plus a true Ames nubster.

Thanks Night Wing, really doesn’t take much I always have fun in most conditions.

Appst, good call.  I do feel I should go a bit shorter.

Wow, yeah. I'm surprised I didn't notice that as well. That paddle seems way too long. Sometimes it looks like your arm is almost fully extended above your head. As an example, I'm 6' tall and my surf paddle is 6'1".

While we're at it, when paddling the board, you might gain a little more stability if you narrowed your stance a bit. The wider your stance is, the more exaggerated the counter active motion becomes. You want your feet to be about 8 to 10 inches apart and slightly staggered. This should also make it easier to jump into your surf stance and center your front foot.

By coincidence there happens to be a really good thread going on over at the Breeze about paddle stance. He's talking about small boards but it generally applies to all boards.

Yeah, I mean......i'm 6'0" and my paddle is 72". I'm not on a board to where I'm sinking or anything, I'm 175 lbs and on a 100L board typically, although that would play into it a bit. So.....the Soloshot is a great tool (when it works) for grabbing some cool videos (which you have done a really good job with), but it also helps for the community to critique and discuss technique, etc.

I have several friends who paddle with a paddle 6" or a shaka or whatever over their head, and it just simply doesn't work well. It tends to keep you more upright, and/or your top hand is going way over your shoulder blade and is inefficient.

Try it, the other thing I've moved to is a much smaller blade and shaft. I'm on a 79" blade and a thinner shaft/handle. I think paddles will trend more in this direction at least for surf.

The shaka thing and even longer came from the era of bigger, very floaty boards. If your feet are three inches off the water and your shoulder is a foot below the top of your head, you need a longer paddle to get the blade buried with your upper arm at shoulder height. My downwind paddles are a full arm extension above my head, partly because downwind boards are thick and float high, and partly to give a good reach, bury the blade, and push down for the entire stroke per Kalama/Puakea gospel.

Jumbled days like that are fine if your board is wide enough, and yeah, your feet are so far apart that you're bouncing around with every ripple. It's hard to get used to having your feet much closer together, you'll be thinking "dose guys is nutz" for a while, but once you adapt to it you be creeping closer to the centerline when it gets rough. And with your feet that far apart you're glued to the board unless you hop both feet at the same time. Lift one foot and you get tossed. With your feet close to the centerline you can move around and even get close to cross-stepping. A real cross-step happens with both feet on the spine, and that's why it looks like the board is being smoothly extruded and retracted with no wobble or accidental steering--the board stays flat.

Thanks for the feedback guys.  PB, my first sup experiences were solely flat water Sups with displaced hulls so I was higher in the water, hence longer paddles.  When I transitioned to the dark side of sup surfing my paddles got shorter but probably not short enough.  Coincidentally, I have a Werner rip stick that I wanted to shorten but can’t get the darned handle off.

You sure catch alotta waves and are getting great use of your SS. Keep it up, Ken! I've been armchair surfing while nursing this bum shoulder for 5 weeks now and your vids have been keeping me focused on the "Light at the end of the tunnel"!
btw- You can straighten horizon in your edits pretty easily...sorry, just my horizontal ocd kickin' in!
One could go into a mall in Kansas and ask a teenager "What is a surfer looking for?, and the answer will always be, "The perfect wave"
