Paddle basic ???'s
« on: March 23, 2009, 07:32:03 AM »
Hi All-

My first post!  ;D  I am a beginner SUP'er and I have only done a small amount of paddling so far. I come from a surf/skate/snowboard background.

I am curious about the basics of paddle design. Why are the paddles curved/bent at the junction of the shaft and blade? I've only seen one paddle that was not bent like that. It just seems odd since canoe/kayak paddles don't have this feature (at least I haven't seen it).

Can anyone explain paddle design theory for me?

Thanks in advance and if this was already discussed please just let me know.

the balde should be 'kicked' so it points forwrd

then the blade is more vertical for a longer part of the stroke
so more power pushing water backwards not up or down

this also prevents the blade 'spooning' water as you lift and release
at the end of the stroke (much easier if the blade is still vertical)

a canoe paddle is released in a line along the width of the blade
whilst a sup paddle along the shaft

I think the blade angle does three things.

Better reach at the start of the stroke.

Better power mid way through the stroke.

Better release at the end of the stroke.

So... It's better all round having that angle..  ;D
