Is FM radio dying?
« on: March 27, 2019, 12:28:38 PM »
The other night some friends of mine were having a discussing about Pandora, XM Radio, and Spotify metric's. We were having some drinks listening to my Pandora which was on my Steely Dan station. Interestingly it only played one Steely Dan song in about an hour. One of my friend says" Spotify metrics are way better than Pandora!" Another friend said he loves his XM Radio in his car. I mentioned this station broadcast from just across the boarder in Mexico. It covers San Diego County and very South Orange County. (105.7 FM) It has a very strange existence. It used to be an 80's hits station with DJ's and give-away's. One day the DJ's, ad's, and English commercials were gone. Now it's Spanish only commercials (polํtica) and then super random B sides and 80's hits mixed with never heard extended plays. Everyone I turn on to it, just loves it.
Anyway, my Spotify advocate friend laughed at me even listening to FM. I am going to put an FM receiver in my office just because of this station I found.

YouTube is still the big dog for music streaming.  https://mashable.com/article/youtube-47-percent-of-on-demand-music-streaming/#yQW0lzcFskqb

That is my # one at home.  Spotify on the road.  I haven't listed to radio in a long while.

Haven't really listened to radio in over a decade, same as TV. I get reminded why every time I rent a car
and someone leaves the radio on, commercials. Pandora does the trick for me.

Anything that lets me skip crappy songs. That’s not FM or SiriusXM.

Here's a little insight too what happened to the 105.7 'MAX FM' station I've been listening to. That's a boat load of money they pay monthly!

If Surfline streamed music and allowed you to setup your favorite surf break web cams on a playlist. I'd pay for that! And stream it all day 8)

Most of the time I listen to my own music on my iPod. When I’m not listening to that, I’ll sometimes listen to Sports Talk radio, but most of that gets boring pretty quickly.

I have developed a strong intolerance for commercials.  99% of music I listen to is commercial free, mostly my own, Sirius, and Amazon Music. We stream most of our TV watching (lots of Netflix and Amazon Prime) and when we do watch commercial TV, I will mute the commercials.  Thru my Roku, I can steam the  ABC National News and they broadcast very few commercials that are shortened.

We've found that the less you watch commercials, the more annoying they become when you are forced to watch them. I guess I just don't like anyone telling me what I need to buy. This might be why I rarely watch opinionated news programs, I don't need anyone telling me what to believe.  Even though I've been called a liberal, I have the same intolerance for CNN as I do for Fox news.

Rock music died at the end of the last rock genre which was Grunge. Nothing new has happened since the turn of the century. Just a rehashing of everything that was done before. We might hear a good new song now and then, but there is no real music scene to go along with it.

Every decade before the turn of the century had many music genres and a scene to go with them. Each genre had a name and you felt like you were a part of that worldwide scene. Some genres even came back a second or third time and were reborn with a totally new sound. It was radio that spread the word. We chose the station that played our music. For me that was mostly college radio which today is pretty lame compared to what it was in the 70', 80's and 90's.

So, not only is radio dying, rock is dead, at least until a new genre is discovered. I think 50 years is a pretty good run.

I remember when Wall of Voodoo came out with Mexican Radio. Those were good times.

I used to love 91X! Reggae Revolution with Native Wayne!

I consume a lot of AM talk radio (KFI Junkie) usually via "I heart Radio" but otherwise it's podcasts, XM and Spotify

I can't remember the last time I had the radio on. It's Apple Music, MP3's or downloaded podcasts.

The only good FM station here is the US Military AFN, and it plays the "news" at the top of every hour. Sometimes get "caught out," and accidentally hear... Well, you get the picture ;-)

FM all the way! Classical, Jazz, Sports Tawk, Classic Hits - mostly 80's. College stations play the new stuff, and NPR with blues.

Boston, Providence decent variety.

In that Forbes article it states that most of the FM listeners are "hairy-eared listeners" and "Pink-eared listeners" are generally streamers.  Hey hey hey..I'm an FM listener and I resemble that remark  :-[
