Larry Allison Spartan or Moray?
« on: March 07, 2019, 02:24:31 PM »
which fin would you recommend for downwind and surf - Spartan or Moray?
I understand the moray is the older fin and the spartan is the new kid.

If you search the forum for a post by Burchas, he is describing the use of both fins for DW (on his low volume UL).
If you ask me, I would go for Larry Allison GTS.
I use the 7.5 deep GTS for my DW on my Maliko and before that on my Vapor.
There is also a 8.5 deep one for bigger tailed boards.

That depends on the board and the conditions.

Moray is usually a good option for pintail boards and it really loosens the board.
The downside is when you get some cross swell / chop you'll find it harder to balance.
This is where the Spartan shines.

Spartan is also a good option if you're using high volume race boards with fat square tail.

GTS is a Frankenstein combining feature of the two above. It's faster than both in most
cases but also works well or general open water paddling.

If you can only get one fin the GTS is a good investment unless you fall under the category
of high volume/fat square tail and looking for downwind specific fin for it, then it's Spartan.

I think that I need a SIC RS to put the Spartan on for a great touring combination...... ???

I agree wholesale. it's always a good idea to buy a board to complement your fin ;D

That make sense burchas, I will investment with spartan then gts later or get both.
