Fin talk
« on: March 04, 2019, 08:30:31 PM »
Our operations manager Kevin Fung is really into fins and has tried more surf and SUP surfing fins than anyone I know.  Here is a good video where he goes into what he considers when choosing a fin:

Well done Kevin. That was very informative and pretty in depth. I need to rethink my current fin setups. Thanks'
It's not overhead to me!

@ Robert

The above video concerning fins is very comprehensive knowledge wise. I'm going to be adding this video to my collection of bookmarks on "fins".

Thanks for sharing the video. It is much appreciated.

Past couple years I’ve been riding the quad with nubster.  Very happy with this setup.

This guy is spot on !.    Having played with many fin set ups on many boards I found I could vary how a board performs.  By changing fins sizes, setups, single to thruster to quads , various sizes in each setup is a lot of fun.
Ive had friends want to get rid of a boards do the way they ride.   Getting them to thinks out side the box changing fins and sizes somrtimes reaps some big smiles and saved them some money,. it has me   Fins are cheaper than boards.
I change fins based on the waves and conditions encounterd.    Experimenting is a gas !!!!!!!!!

paddle on and fin up !

Thanks Robert for putting this on. A lot of good stuff explaining the basics
and some general information about the shapes.

I would rather he would go more into the key features of fins such as foil
and cant and actually talk about the specifics of the flex instead of the last
5 minutes which were somewhat misguided.

Here is another video about the subject which includes some of these features:

These are great video's. Thanks!

Can anyone recommend a video that focus more on race and/or downwind fin setups? Not having much luck searching for that myself.

Hi Burchas,
Agreed, fin cant and foil profiles should have been mentioned in the video, that was the first thing I mentioned to Kevin after watching it.  The SUPboarder video is good but I would add that thinner profiles are faster while thicker profiles are more forgiving.  We are finding that foil profiles really make a big difference, especially in foiling.

The same concepts apply to race fins,  more rake= better tracking, less rake= easier to pivot.  Thinner profile= faster but not as forgiving.
Deeper/ bigger fins are more stable but also add more drag.  There is always a tradeoff, so which fin works best really depends on the conditions and board shape.
Good topic for a future video, thanks.

Can't they remember to discuss cant as well as toe?

JP of no cant no toe does still have some following.

Both of these vids were a fantastic overview of things finny!
