I had plates installed top and bottom on my non-dominant wrist after a bad fall (skateboarding...7 or so fractures). I worked really hard on mobility after the cast was removed--physical therapists are no joke. Got 90% of mobility back, everything I need for daily use and sports use. It aches in the cold, esp. mornings, but it's a lot better than it would have been.

Hope that helps. Happy to answer any Qs. Good luck.

I have a clean break.
I thought a cast would do.

We are going to re xray and then decide.

He says it will line up better with the plate.

but it will cost me..

I don't know if this will help. A number of years ago my wife broke her wrist while we were heli-skiing up in Canada. We emailed her x-rays to the orthopedist back home, and he scheduled her for surgery as soon as we got back. The rural Doctor up in Canada put on an old style plaster cast, instead of the newer fibreglass type. Watching him work was like watching a talented sculpture as he used the plaster to mold the bones back into place. When we got home, our local surgeon was very impressed by the cast, and said that she would not need surgery. He described plaster casting as a lost art, and one that would allow many people to avoid surgery, if the caster was skilled at molding the bones back in place. It worked perfectly for my wife, with no surgery and a quick recovery.

Suppo.  I had three broken wrists more than 50yrs ago (2 at one time...!?)  The Flintstone docs simple cast them.  No ill effects or noticeable arthritis.  I suspect Docs are more advanced today  ...but.

What i suspect is this guy is a surgeon so his core competency is cutting.

Still I don't think it is worth a short cut,,

I got a second opinion and there is a break through the crown (if that is what it is called)

Decided to have the surgery.

Hurt like hell the first night and next day..

Started to regain function day 2

A Lot of swelling at first, better now.

As the swelling decreases the functionality increases.

See the Doc Monday,  Hopefully Ready for PT..

I remember my skateboarding years in my teens was riddled with lots of breaks and casts. Then no real injuries until I hit 50. I'm seeing a few of my friends with pictures like yours of them. Mostly from mountain biking and motorcycles. Them bones ain't as flexible as they used to be. It's going to take a while for the swelling and random nerve pains to settle down. Go easy on it Ralph.

If they'd gone a little longer with those screws they could have put on locknuts and washers.

I have seen lots of fractures repaired with plates and screws. Done a few myself (don’t ask). That is very nice work!
