yep creek--and the 3-5 footer looks maybe even a bit soft--like it's not a jacking death-slab, but it is a massively powerful thick hunk of water--

easy call, tough call? you made the RIGHT CALL to be safe and do some touring!

Creek I have a question. Those conditions you recently encountered look quite ginormous and choosing to live to surf another day sure makes a lot of sense to me. I was wondering if you had your regular surf crew around, folks you trust, would you have considered paddling out on some days whem you went cattle rustling instead?

soft?....ha a.... that was the one he rode,
most of the time they were caught inside closeouts that broke 200 yards outside them.
They would duck dive under 12' of  whitewater and wait "inside" for makable waves.
Plus the wind was 35 mph, so there was nothing even remotely doable for me on SUP.
I took those pics from 1/2 mile down the cliff, then zoomed it. hell, I almost got blown off the cliff  ;D
I couldn't really even see them from where I was... they were just a white line on the face.

NEplay.... a crew with local knowledge would make things easier.
Being the only SUP around here makes it interesting every time I paddle out.

I have one buddy, a 30 year old surfer from Australia/France, living in Ireland..... who chases massive slabs all the time.
Don't think he would be my best bet for a guy to paddle out after. He'd get me killed  ;D ;D
But he's a great guy to hang out with  :)

I did love my session in Cascais, when I was at a SUP break.
That wave was great... I plan to go back soon, but it costs me $150 to drive there and back..... budget buster.

Here's some pics from the Cascais SUP FB page,
These were taken Saturday, when it was 20' here....
they are tucked in around the corner from the North swells, so they get a nice manageable wrap.

1st pic is my buddy Cisco!

thanks for the answer Creek. Makes sense that you have to rely on yourself. I had a few experiences where I was going to pull the plug but someone I knew told my on the beach something like "it is softer then it looks:, or "once you get out it is fun and you will be fine" but of course it was nothing like what you have been facing.

yup, years of traveling alone has got me reasonably well trained not to over think stuff.... just suit up and go out.

To show you what I'm up against... here's the weeks forecast.
Today is the "small" day..... at 3-4 ft

the pic shows what todays "3-4ft" was like
I drove all over looking for the right break....
as soon as I paddled out the wind went bad... but I got 4 waves anyway  :)

What the heck is 8 - 13ft going to be like on Friday?!?

I am in Cascais, visiting Cisco and Isabel again!
Sagres is just out of control big, so I was looking for some manageable surf.

I managed to get a solo session in yesterday.
When I first went out, I took some pretty hefty waves for my 70 year old body.
I was asking myself.... "What the heck are you doing?"  ;D ;D

In truth... it was pretty manageable compared to what I get down south.
But still, some size and power.

After an hour, I was joined by Mario, who paddled over and said
"Hi, I'm Mario, from Youtube..... I commented on your Portugal video"
Great guy.. riding a very small board and ripping!

A while later, we were joined by a pretty solid SUP crew. Great day... over 3 hour session!

When I walked out of the water, a guy came up to me with his little boy, he said:
"Are you Creek? My wife and I were eating in that restaurant and I recognized your board!"

Super cool how the SUP world is so tight!

This is a great area....as beautiful and wild as Sagres is.... I am much better suited for the surf around here, and the SUP crew is totally awesome.

After a solos SUP winter, I have found my peeps!  ;D ;D

I am riding the 9'4 Creek in these photos from yesterday in Cascais.

Those are some great looking waves. You're ripping pretty good for a mature supper ;) Trunking it or Spring suit?
It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

Definitely looking like some fun waves there. Overhead, somewhat clean, clear water.  Nice !!  Have fun.

Maybe I missed it but which beach is that in Cascais?  You are looking good out there. And I dig the Porto cat hanging out on your beach view desk.

Hi J... I usually don't name beaches, but they said "tell them!"  ;D
Praia da Parede.... it's got a huge SUP crew.... really nice variety of peaks and a lot of SUP pride!

Definitely stop here to surf if you are in the area and say hi to Manuel at GUSU!
Food, drink, surf and safe free parking all in one place!
And wave... I might be staying across the street  ;D

Pic 1 is the crew at the Santa paddle
Pic 2 is local charger George... ripping it up on his NSP. Same day as my pics.

Lot of young chargers here on tiny SUPs as well.
I surfed with one guy yesterday, in size and lots of side chop.... he was ripping on a small Hokua. Leash broke, board went to the rocks.... but he saved it, just as I was coming in.... wind got stupid.

Love this place and my friends here!

Yeah toolate.... this place is similar to Hawaiian size and power.
I have learned that 5-8 ft is freeking huge and thick!
Pic 3 is swell rolling by the coast, on it's way to Parede!

Too funny RbGar!
My crate  ;D

TD... 2 mm top and trunks.
Plenty comfortable for a few hours but then I get cold when I come in to the beach if not in the sun.

Thanks RonC!
See you when it warms up ;)
