That is a really nice spot. And not too crowded at least during the winter.

It always feels pretty good after you push your comfort zone. It was a good day  ;D
I'm not very religious but the first thing that came to mind was Amen...maybe I am religious! That was incredible, Creek! Way to step up in those conditions. But was there really any doubt you could handle yourself? Not by me! That nail in the tire made me lol...sorry. I so wanted to pull the trigger on Portugal, but it's just too cold for my wife there right now. hopefully maybe in the fall.

That countryside looks like unspoiled Southern California coast.  How I imagine it must have looked 100 years ago.
I thought the same exact thing. Also reminded me of the openness of Peru.

Ticket     = $544
Baggage = $440 (one way)  :'(
cost per item:p
9'4 Creek         = $185
9'0 Custom      = $135
1 Checked bag = $120

I priced a round-trip ticket on United to Portugal at $450. Board bag woulda been 200/ea way I think. Kinda why I'm heading back out to CA in a bit. $40/ea way right now on United. Celebrating California makin' surfing the state sport. Hauling my two Cannibals out there for some feasting! First checked bag is free, then the board bag is only being charged a regular checked baggage fee. YIPPEE!

One could go into a mall in Kansas and ask a teenager "What is a surfer looking for?, and the answer will always be, "The perfect wave"

I so wanted to pull the trigger on Portugal, but it's just too cold for my wife there right now. hopefully maybe in the fall.

Early Fall is the best season for Portugal. The Summer winds (and crowds) are over, lightwind or off-shore all day, warm weather (due to the offshore it's better than in the Summer), and first good swells start rolling in. October is a safer bet. Sometimes November is really good (sunny everyday, great waves, warm weather) and sometimes it's really bad (strong South winds and gig storms).

Rick,  I like narration.  I talk to waves; I don't know their names because some days they are 9 yr old girls, other days, Hells Angels.  And, it's cool that you get in and thread the local pack.  When 'The Stranger' shows up, I am sure they are wondering if they are safe; is this dude gonna ruin my day?

...and, it appears, unlike some Cent. Am. locations, you didn't have to hire the guy who was about to get 4 new tires - not to take them.  Does it seem relatively safe from a petty theft aspect?

I simply slid them into stock Sunova Board Bags.
No extra padding or protecting needed.
The bags are tough as nails and properly padded, with awesome handles!

Lots to carry, so I placed the 9'0 on top of the 9'4 bag (picture)
Out at the drop-off curb, I grabbed the nose handle of the bottom board and dragged them both through the airport... including down stairs.
They slid along nicely, on the high tech protective pad under the tail.
Both got to Portugal without a scratch.

That nail in the tire made me lol...sorry.

I know I have the knowledge and skills for the conditions, but the game is changing as I age.
At 70, I am not as durable as I was.
Not a complaint or lament... just a statement of reality.

It doesn't take much to tweak a back, knee, neck these days...
so I manage my risk for the long game, especially if I don't know the break..... rips, bottom conditions.

Ha ha.... the tire didn't really blow, but the footage was perfect for that skit  ;D
The nail has been there for a week.... it took a while to find it.
I had to make an appointment for Thursday, 30 miles away, to have a tire plugged.

Jim

It appears very laid back around here in surf village.... but websites warn about petty theft in tourist areas.
I take the usual precautions and don't leave stuff unattended.
The surf spots are busy on the beach and breaks can be a ways out... so limited opportunity to set up SoloShot and wander 500 yards away.

Two questions:

1.  Favorite libation
2.  Favorite local dish

Forecast looks very good for the next couple of weeks! No wind, small to medium sized waves for the next 2 days, and a pumping swell afterwards!

Two questions:

1.  Favorite libation
2.  Favorite local dish

1 - I have a bottle of Absolute and Coke Zero that I mix up when I get the urge.
Happily, I am not a wine aficionado.

2 - ha ha.... I don't go out. I live on next to nothing... truly nothing, no matter where I am.
I cook all my own food or buy a $2 sandwich at the local grocery store for lunch on the go.
Today, they didn't have any, so I bought a $2 Brie and ate that in a very Brie friendly setting  :)

Portugal is super affordable... that's what put it on my radar in the first place  ;D ;D

Yes... I am stoked!
I found some good wave's today!
GoPro camera was dead when I went to turn it on, so no video.  :'(
Plenty of great pics of my wanderings though, so I'll post some up.
