That countryside looks like unspoiled Southern California coast.  How I imagine it must have looked 100 years ago.

On the topic of keeping it affordable
I don't take my phone out of the house.... so I never have GPS directions. Don't own a map either.

I look over the "Google Map" route on my computer and memorize the turns....
which can get interesting around this desolate coast.

Lately the wind has been howling and sideshore most places, so I have been in "recon" mode
Many of the breaks I want to explore are only accessible by the many dirt "roads" that criss cross through the countryside.
It gets interesting  ;D

Here's a vid I made with my "point & shoot" because my Kook Hat Cam had a dead battery.

Nothing new, just another old man, wandering around, lost.
I did find the route Google maps had laid out.... ha ha, I think they were trying to kill me  ;D ;D ;D
Good thing my instincts said NO!

Plus some pics from the day:

Creek - not sure if this was mentioned in another post or you figured it out, but Google Maps has an offline mode where you download the region you are in (say the Portugal Coast), and then it runs off the GPS on your phone without the need for data. It works perfectly, I just used it in Costa Rica, and if it can navigate those dirt roads, I'm pretty sure it can handle Portugal.

Fun stuff Rick. And APPST is right on about the google maps offline function. It's what I use most of the time if I'm going somewhere remote. Ends the frustration of your map quitting just when things get confusing. I don't know what kind of phone you have, but most have a compass function that includes GPS coordinates. It's a very precise compass, GPS and altimeter and it works even in airplane mode (with transmitters shut off). It's strange how many functions that few people pay attention to or need are contained in a smartphone these days.

Yikes! Sorry... having too much fun and I am falling behind my posting  ;D
I take so many pix and vids that I am lost in Edit-ville

wetstuff:

I was mislead a bit about the weather.
Ex-pat forums said warm days, cool nights.... light jacket only
Screw that... it gets down to 41* at night. No heat in my apartment.
I had to buy a down vest, gloves and a wool hat..... to wear inside my house to keep from freezing  ;D ;D

Funny thing is... I can surf most of the time in a 2mm top and baggies, cuz the water is 60 and the sun is warm.

Rider:
Yes, no exactly what I would call my ideal SUP surf conditions.
Very beefy waves since I got here..... thick and powerful with pretty technical conditions

Bean... at the size and power here, I don't have any problem getting out, but the rides tend to all end with a good thumping.
I like good waves with some size.... but I don't bounce well anymore, so I prefer a point style wave with a nice shoulder.

I am sure my exploration will unearth my type of break.
I may have found it on the "lost" day... but it was big and unruly that day.... and VERY remote.
Pretty sure I'll be on my own there.

Ankle is doing very well, thank you! It should be good to go when conditions clean up......
25-30 mph N winds leave only a few workable spots.

One is a  spot that I am never going to walk down again... let alone carry a SUP.
Scary steep, ancient stairs with no railing (Video to come)
It's clean and small with a lot of shortboarders dropping in on each other..... so I am not missing anything there!

Went to another spot some kids from Holland said had SUP friendly access.
Ha! I got halfway down and said frig this... mountain goat stuff down a rocky cliff. (2nd to last pic)

In the spring and fall, I am sure the conditions are much more SUP friendly.... winter is challenging

I would definitely include Sagres to any Portugal SUP trip..... the area is a never ending amazement.
Simply stunning in it's formidable coastline and plains beauty... never ending hiking, biking and exploring.
Then there are the quaint villages!

Thanks APPST and Pono, for the "Offline" map thingy
Dingfix had sent ma a nice PM explaining that little gem!
I tried it.... perfect!
No more wandering around aimlessly.... although I will miss that  ;D

I actually brought a back-up Iphone with no SIM card in it.
I use that for the offline maps so T-Mobile can't find a way to charge me  ;D ;D ;D

the "easy" path to the surf  ;D ;D

That area totally reminds me of Baja, Mex. I should say, it looks like Baja used to look :'(
It's not overhead to me!

Besides gmap offline there is a great app `map.me` that allows you to download maps while on Wi-Fi and then uses free GPS data for navigation. Great to use when you have no cellphone reception  also.

I am not sure if this tells you anything you don't already know:

https://webapp.navionics.com/?lang=en#boating@12&key=idy%60F~ssu%40

It obviously doesn't have the granularity to get really specific info, but you can see where the topo lines are really tight. It gets deep crazy fast on the SE side of the point (Ponta de Sagres). I am in NC; you have to go out a long way, like over a mile, to get in 68' of water.

Wow, Creek. You are seriously livin' the dream! Stay safe out there, man. That's some rugged countryside and powerful surf. Beautiful travelogue here.
One could go into a mall in Kansas and ask a teenager "What is a surfer looking for?, and the answer will always be, "The perfect wave"

Yea, I got back in the water yesterday!

I told myself I was laying low for another week.... then I realized the wind was perfect for a right point I had been stalking.

As always, it was much bigger than the GoPro shows.... (pics show actual size)
plus I put the camera on an experimental new angle... but it restricted the view.

My first go at that beach, so I didn't want to add the drama of the SoloShot to the experience.
I had no idea what to expect from the locals at this break....
being the only SUP... and wearing the Kook Hat Cam was enough for one day  ;D

I gotta say... it's pretty intimidating to paddle out around here....
the whole arena is so massive and overpowering.... then add solid swell with sneaker sets
The amount of water moving out in the rip that I paddled out in, was creating a surprising amount of cross chop in general.

I played it on the cautious side and didn't fade back too far on my waves.
It was pretty soft on the shoulders of outside sets, but guys were getting barreled when they set up the inside correctly.
I was happy just to feel the place out and avoid any more injuries.

It always feels pretty good after you push your comfort zone. It was a good day  ;D

Creeker:  So nice to see a vid with you wave riding!!!!!  Looks sooooo nice over there.....and sooooo much warmer!!!!   Me and Mr. Big hit it here today and it was small, cold, and breezy, but a nice refresh nonetheless!  January has been a good month with a good number of outings but not the conditions ya got there!

Enjoy!!!!
