On the topic of keeping it affordable
I don't take my phone out of the house.... so I never have GPS directions. Don't own a map either.

I look over the "Google Map" route on my computer and memorize the turns....
which can get interesting around this desolate coast.

Lately the wind has been howling and sideshore most places, so I have been in "recon" mode
Many of the breaks I want to explore are only accessible by the many dirt "roads" that criss cross through the countryside.
It gets interesting  ;D

Here's a vid I made with my "point & shoot" because my Kook Hat Cam had a dead battery.

Nothing new, just another old man, wandering around, lost.
I did find the route Google maps had laid out.... ha ha, I think they were trying to kill me  ;D ;D ;D
Good thing my instincts said NO!

What a place that is.  That left hander, even with all the wind on it looks like a spot.
Though a very technical inside ouch.

Thanks Creek!

The “search” for new surf spots looks almost as much fun as surfing. You are an inspiration for me to get out there and look around for new breaks in my own backyard.

Cheers

Hey Creek, you are an inspiration. You are doing "the search" and in my country. This reminds me that we should be always hungry to explore for new peaks!

Keep the pictures coming!

Also, don't forget to try some of the local food. Or even ask the lady that rents your room to cook some local dish. When I travel I also travel in a budget, but trying the food is part of diving into the culture!

Have fun and "boas ondas" :-)

Amazing and absolutely inspiring!  Tell us the tricks about how to do this on nothing but SSI.

It's easy, no matter where I go, I live on exactly the same amount of money....
destinations are picked by opportunity and affordability.

The flight was cheap, I saved that over the summer
Baggage was expensive and made me skimp after I arrived (I have only gone out for one drink since I got here)
The car cost less than I would spend on gas at home.... and here, I rarely drive, and then it's short distances.

The real trick is going away long enough to absorb the travel costs, into a lower cost of living.

My idea of eating out:
grab a ham & veggie baguette ($1.90) and small drink ($.69) at the supermarket.... and sit on the beach.

You simply have to believe you will make it all work..... and just go.

Thank you for the wisdom and inspiration!  Did you keep your Cape apartment?

Rick,  What's the weather like? We can see the Sun, but It looks cold.  Somehow I expected Portugal to be semi-tropical...

And, when you wear a fullsuit - the rest of us know the water is cold.

Fun for Creek to get away. What I am not seeing is SUP compatable surf. For my money I’ll take Thousand Peaks, Puamana, Launiopoko, etc, etc.

boy o boy Rick --

Even Orleans is an icebox today!

Hang on, massive waves are on the way with the NW wind that's been blowing for the last 2 days

I’d like to know Ricks take on that too.

The only surf I can think of that’s not SUP compatible would be heavy beach break that can only be accessed by duck diving.  That and protected prone surf spots (like Honolua.)
