Hey Creek,

Great that you are having fun! The South west region of the country is still great to surf kind of alone or with less people on the water. A few years ago the complete coast line was a paradise for surfers. Nowadays is a jungle in the most known spots. Places like Ericeira ( world surf reserve ), Peniche, Lisbon or even Nazaré are crowded with dozens of surfers per peak. I have some world class spots near home but find myself needing to drive away from them in order to have some peace and to be ( kind of ) alone in the peak. I guess the good old days are gone now!

If you came to Lisbon area give a shout out. There are some fun spots to try. "Ericeira" has some beach breaks great for SUP and "Caparica" is also very SUP friendly. There is also "Parede" were the SUP community reunites. This is a spot were 90% are SUPers, but were you can find large crowds.

Have fun in Sagres. I will be heading down near by in April into "Vila Nova de milfontes" but I guess you will be long gone ....

Cheers!

Thanks Portugal !

I hope to check out the area around Lisbon and Ericeira on my way out, which is April 2nd.... sorry to miss you!

The reasons you mention are exactly why I chose this barren and majestic coast as my destination.

Yesterday, I got totally lost while doing recon on some remote breaks.... sooo much fun!
I'm making a video of it now... hopefully post it later today

Here's a screen shot as I go 4-wheeling to the boonies, in my Panda mini  ;D ;D ;D

Thanks Eastie, feels much better, but not strong enough to surf yet.... and I won't risk annoying it with paddling.
Unfortunately, it looks like surf and weather are going stormy in a few days, for at least the next week.

Having a blast re-habbing though!

My morning surf check ride got boring, so I followed some tracks off road.
Turned into an amazing cliff ride/walk, that was more like being in Baja!
Ended up at a surf spot north of town... thankfully it looked flat  ;)

Then I ate my lunch on a harbor bench. Paddling was tempting   ;D

If my ankle survives re-hab, I should be good to go when the weather clears.

Cool, Rick.   That little bay looks great.  Was that sign a 'No Dogs'?   Too bad about the ankle, but sometimes it's not bad to slow down.  I'm one of those dumb bastards that would burn myself out on the first day of a short trip in garbage surf - just to get in 'new' water.

Creek, in case it helps... i have a long term ankle problem, tried a few things and this is by far the best.  I wear it for cycling and paddling, it even fits inside my wetsuit boots.  Not the cheapest but it definitely works.    https://www.ossurwebshop.co.uk/form-fit-ankle-support-with-figure-8-strap.html#b_rwc-16-1547743165-4

Keep the reports coming, great reading.

Jim... yup, no dogs.
that little bay is at the bottom of very steep set of ancient stairs, more than I will do carrying my SUP  ;D

dingfix, thanks for the thought, it is much appreciated!

RrrrbeeeeGaaaar..... boo boo BoB, perfect  ;D

I swear, if I wasn't always getting lost, I wouldn't have any fun at all.

Went looking to recon some caves to paddle on a calm day
but had to go through a big town to get there.

no GPS, so I faked it and ended up driving down what looked like a pedestrian street, so I put on my Kook Hat Cam and hit record!
I never saw another car... in the city center!
No one even gave me a second thought.
Don't know if I screwed up or not, but it was fun  ;D ;D

I just kept going till I escaped town and found a place to hike to the caves.
Gonna be a great place to paddle on the right wind and tide!

Between, biking Baja, driving on side walks and hiking caves, it has been an action packed day!

For someone not selling you're still doing a good job. You could get a deal with the Portuguese board of tourism or something.....:). I've thought about trips there before but this is getting it higher on the list already....and you've just started.....:)

Amazing and absolutely inspiring!  Tell us the tricks about how to do this on nothing but SSI.

It's easy, no matter where I go, I live on exactly the same amount of money....
destinations are picked by opportunity and affordability.

The flight was cheap, I saved that over the summer
Baggage was expensive and made me skimp after I arrived (I have only gone out for one drink since I got here)
The car cost less than I would spend on gas at home.... and here, I rarely drive, and then it's short distances.

The real trick is going away long enough to absorb the travel costs, into a lower cost of living.

My idea of eating out:
grab a ham & veggie baguette ($1.90) and small drink ($.69) at the supermarket.... and sit on the beach.

You simply have to believe you will make it all work..... and just go.
