Talldude chasing whales..
« on: January 02, 2019, 05:43:51 PM »
Well, I tried at least. I couldn't catch up to them, but got close enough to film them with my phone. I'm trying to zoom in on them, holding my phone with two hands, trying to keep them in the frame all while balancing on my 25" wide unlimited race board. It was almost like a lake out there. Super nice way to start the year. I paddled a little over 8 miles. Felt good and I picked up a bunch of trash along the way. Karma:)

That is so awesome. My one time paddling with a whale was unforgettable. Congrats!

Still, it was a treat to see a whale. Maybe the next time you see one, you'll be closer for an "up close and personal view".

It's always a camera dilema. The GoPro does an amazing job 80% of time. If it had a zoom, then it'd be 95% there. My phone (Pixel 2) can be zoomed digitally, but it's weak. Plus it's having to shoot through a plastic waterproof bag/case. What I really need for shooting whales and such is a waterproof, optical zoom camera.

Magnificent creatures. Had one swim under me once. Way more enjoyable than the sharks to say the least!

Always fun unless they're breaching near you--and headed towards you. Ask Headmount. Or is one come up next to you and blows all over you. Looks like it's just water, but it's more like snot.

That is so cool you spotted those whales while paddling AND you had a cam! I love whales. One of the first spanish words I learned WAY back in PR. Ballena...wow, I even spelled it correct first try!
I came WAY close to single whale this summer after a flat water paddle. Just got to shore and some guy comes running up to me, "Yo, did you see the whale"? I was like "No, and I just paddled for over an hour out there"! Hey replies, "Turn around", I look out to sea and immediately see it surface at about 10 o'clock. So I jump back on the sup and bolt out about 100 feet. It was just past the breakers, one of the closest I've ever seen here. Just as I get to about where I feel it would surface I slow my roll and it did just that. Surfaced about 10 feet from me, it was so close I saw it's eye and could hear it's blow hole beautifully. It was one of the most calm and serene creatures I've ever seen. Too bad no GoPro. So I continue on my due south course parallel w/the beach but when it surfaced again it had veered about 20 degrees out to sea and was about 50 yards from me. Too bad, I woulda paddled a few miles w/it had it kept course. I love telling that story!

One could go into a mall in Kansas and ask a teenager "What is a surfer looking for?, and the answer will always be, "The perfect wave"

Guys who dangle their legs in the water out beyond the breakers said you were nuts? Yeah, I know that's pretty low risk but I bet the risk of bodily harm is greater than it is chasing whales on a SUP.

i did see a huge GW breach with a turtle in its mouth at spanish house a while ago! prolly 150 yards from the lineup

locals werent impressed--surfed on!

make sure the eyes dont look like turtle eyes!
