Last week was crazy at Mavericks.

Here is a crazy good edit of Kai's antics:

My surf amigo Dave text'd me on Sunday morning (Dec 16th) and said "I'm here at Press with Jeff (Clark), Kai and Jamie Mitchell."

I'm coming I replied.  I had just been doing a surf check at Rocky's cove.  The waves weren't yet macking.

Kai was having breakfast with Jeff and Cassandra.  I asked if Kai would like to go foil Rocky's cove.  They deferred suggesting that they would be getting their equipment in order.

Jeff was Kai's tow partner all day:

I paddled out on Thursday early afternoon.  When I was biking to the point through Princeton harbor I passed Twiggy.  I had my foil and stopped.  We chatted about foiling and he suggested he would paddle out later in the day.

I was locking up my bike up walks this tall Brazilian looking guy.  He starts asking about the foil and my Pono-Special Phat Tire electric cycle.   "Are you Lucas?" I ask.

Yes.  We chat about foils.  He tells me he has one in Hawaii.  A GoFoil but he is not sure which one.  He says he is super tired and had been out all day.

I run to the beach, flip my foil board, and start paddling out.  100 yards out I pass Kai on his way in.  Then 200 yards Jeff Clark on a Jet Ski with a woman on the back of the ski.  Quite the star-studded lineup and I was still only 200 yards from shore.

Here were some of Lucas Chianca's antics - CHUMBO:

Heard an interview of Kai last week with him saying he left the water that day really disappointed with himself for not being more aggressive on the waves.  That really is what stands out with him. Especially at home in his backyard at Peahi, a break he is obviously more familiar with than Mavericks....  while others are hanging on claws dug in, merely surviving in maxed out swell... Kai is actually burying his rail, doing deep bottom turns, attacking the lip and doing repeated air drops and pulling it off seemingly comfortable. Whaaaat!!?? I'm quite looking forward to watching one of the most well rounded waterman of all time continue to push things into the stratosphere over the next decade. Mind-blowing and quite fun to watch.

Negative.  That was Ian Wallace on the SUP.  He and Haley Fiske are the 2 most prominent SUP superstars in the lineup.

I have to give huge kudos to my SUP amigo and ultimate Mavericks mentor Dave Westendorf.

10 years ago before I ever SUP'd he lent me a board and dragged me out to Mavericks.  I sat wide, with even wider eyes, and watched and then inched closer and closer to the break.  I never ended up catching a wave prone.

Dave had been going through a dry spell at Mavericks.  I am not sure he caught a wave in the past 2 years.  Then just before Christmas he dusted off his 12' Lyle Carlson gun.  We paddled out a few times in marginally breaking conditions.  I was all wobbly from the foil's influence.

He proceeded to start catching waves and raving about the "Huge advantage that a SUP gives in the lineup. . . OMG I can see everything coming and I am ready to takeoff . . . . I am paddling so fast I am already in . . . ."  I was a bit miffed about these revelations considering I had been crowing about all these things years earlier and HAD in fact motivated him to buy the 12' Lyle Carlson in the first place - 5 years prior.  He had never even caught a wave at Mavericks on this board.

He was booming about a wave he caught just before Christmas.  "Wave of the Day!"  Of course this is all hyperbole until:

He forwards me this from Dec 19th.  Wave of a lifetime.  Certainly for 99.999% of the planet.  And even for those of us who surf Mavericks.  The lighting, the perfect rotation into position, the solo ride for 400 yards all filmed in perfect 4K from the heavens by a random and very expert drone operator.

Way to go Dave!  Go full screen.
