Daytona Beach, January, 2/3 or 3/4 wetsuit
« on: December 28, 2018, 01:23:14 PM »
I'll be driving down to Port Orange Florida from New York next week and was wondering about wetsuit recommendations for the month of January.
I've been checking out the cams for Sunglow Pier in Daytona and also New Smyrna beach. Both look like they have plenty uncrowded beach breaks so it should be a fun month.
If there are any spots to avoid on a SUP it would be great to know in advance. Just looking to get in some small fun waves.

Thanks

Paul

Shorty for a New Yorker. 4/3 for locals.  ;D

A few people from Mad Dog surf shop SUP the Sunglow Pier.

New Smyrna for the bigger waves. $20/ day to drive out there. Or $100 per year.

Driving on the beach used to be free in the Winter. Not anymore.

Hi Paul, how are you buddy?

Make a stop in JAX to say hi to MDsurf and the awesome Jackonville SUP crew!
JAX is my favorite area in FLA. Lot's of beach and good people.

I'd surf it in a 2mm top, but a full 3/2 should be just fine for most days.

Thanks Dwight and Creek,
I'll probably buy the pass since it looks like I'll be back again in March.
I stopped by Mad Dog when I was down there in October but I think they were out surfing. Heard they're a good shop and nice people.
I'm doing pretty well Creek.  Retired in July so now it's time to play. I will try and stop in Jacksonville on my way down. Looks like a cool shop.
Really can't wait to get down there.  I've had it with these New York winters.

Thanks Creek for the wonderful comment on the Jax Sup crew. We do have a great bunch of guys here.  Paul give me a shout when your here and we can hit some good wave spots.  Also a 3/2 will be fine.

PJB...   There's lots solid info for just south of the Canaveral bump. I gather the water is typically warmer there. (I got a call from Tory Strange at the Surf Station in St. Aug. looking for fleece about last Feb. because they were in the 40s.)

There's a bunch of links up/dn the coast like this...  http://www.gosurfsportswear.com/piercam/pier.html    Have fun!

I was in West Palm Beach the second week on January '18 (right after cold wave) and while I brought my shortie I was fine in long sleeves rashguard and trunks. But I have a layer of my own protection and I used to Boston winters so take it with a grain of salt...

Florida isn’t all the same. West Palm Beach practically touches the Gulf Stream. Water holds at 75 in Winter. Meanwhile Jacksonville is so freakin cold you might as well be in NC. Apologies to Jacksonville.

The Cape is the biggest temperature transition point. Cold above it, warm below it. That is why I live below it.

Wow, good to know, DW. We are heading to Hallandale Beach in Feb. Should I bring a shortie?

South Florida reminds me of Hawaii in Winter. You think no, but the truth is both can be cold when the wind is blowing with water temps in the 70s.

I remember having to wear a down parka at Key Biscayne one windy winter morning and I'm from NH. Another time we were sliding on frozen puddles at Cocoa Beach and saw the orange groves on Merritt Island completely white with frost from the misting. The mornings can be chilly. Of coarse the water is always warm, but how much time do we actually spend in the water?

I was a transplanted New Yawker living in the Daytona area. Maybe I was a little more used to the cold, but we used to go swimming pretty much all year. Of course it could get really cold too.

I paddled at Amelia Island today in a 3mm farmer John and a rash top and was toasty warm, but air temp was in the 70s. Water was around 60.

I was practicing launches and landings. Tried catching a few waves. I was in the soup a lot. If anything, I felt overdressed. There were a couple of guys in shorties.

Hey, thanks for all of the input. I spent the last two days dog proofing my yard and forgot to look at this.
I think I'll be fine with the 3/2 but I'm throwing the 4/3 in the truck just in case.
MdSurf, thanks for the invite.  I'll be in touch for sure.  Google says Jacksonville is only an hour and a half away. That's not bad at all.

Cocoa Beach was 85, with 73 water temp. No rubber needed. Dreamy-awesome foiling.
